Any recent experience with HelpEx?

I have a couple of Chinese students who plan to spend January "working" in Tasmania via Helpex. They have asked me for advice. My main concerns are whether this is legal on a tourist visa ( I know woofing is a grey area) and what sort of work they can expect to be doing.
Thanks for any tips.

Sounds illegal but they'll probably get away with it

It's fruit picking time here in Tasmania. I'm sure there'd be a small fruit grower somewhere that'd flick them some folding currency for an honest day's work. People eat their weight in cherries as a bonus as well. Hostel notice boards would be their best bet.

They are not working for money with Helpex, it is for food and accommodation and generally not a full days work.

I have heard of no immigration raids on a Helpex place, but doesn't mean it might not be a grey area.

Thanks, DD, but they have already signed up with HelpEx and have some offers of work but the work was not specified. I don't think they are up to picking apples but apparently they only have to work for 3-4 hours a day.

AFAIK, the situation in Aus is the same as NZ - technically, you should have a work visa for wwoofing or helpx, BUT in practice the tax department has absolutely no interest in it and has far better things to do with their time.

We get loads of wwoofers here on a tourist visa. I've never had anybody say they got any questions from anyone.
