City of Comitán in Chiapas?

It sounds intriguing.
I found some old threads, but not much first-hand experience.
I could do this by going a day or two from San Cristobal de las Casas, or as a daytrip (it's 1:50 bus ride, apparently).

Would anyone recommend it?

Comitan is a beautiful, clean city. There is a small ruin within walking distance of the plaza. Be sure to visit Tenam Puente, about twenty minutes south. Really nice grounds, awesome temples, ball courts, huge trees, views, and very few people. If you have time go to the Lagos Monte Bello, and be sure to visit Chincultic. Here we saw no one at all except grounds keepers. Beautiful area, and very nice people.

See you there!

I won't lie, for some reason I found the city a bit boring (stayed for two days). I didn't go to the ruins, though.

Nice place as long as your expectations are in check... virtually no gringos, though, and it does have its own unique flavor.

Comitan is one of the few places I've visited in Mexico which I truly disliked.

I've visited Comitan several times. It makes a good base to explore Los Lagos, Chiflon and other sights/sites in the surrounding area. Other than as a base, it is hardly a "must see". Centro is a long 11 block hike from where the bus stops on the highway. If time is short, you can visit the lakes and waterfall on tours from SCLC.

Many indigenas live in this region. I have friends who live in Las Margaritas. I would not classify the area as a tourist destination but it is pleasant. Having friends who speak Tzotzil is a definite plus.

Actually the language Tojolaba'al is the one generally spoken in the region, related to Tzotzil but as different from it as Tzeltal.

LW, I'm curious what you disliked.

Thanks everyone for your interesting posts on this.

I disliked the people I interacted with, and the 'vibe' of the place.

I enjoyed visiting Comitan. It was a good base to visit the great waterfalls at El Chiflon. I stayed in a nice but modest hotel a few blocks from the central square, I think it was called Posada de los Flores (80 MXN), also reviewed positively on tripadvisor. And of course due to its lower elevation, it was warmer than San Cristobal de las Casas.
