telephone service in Vietnam

I will going to Vietnam soon and staying for about a year. I know that I can use skype to communicate with family in US, but would also like a cell phone for emergencies and for use locally. Is the best option to go with an international cell and sim card? Is one company better than another? I will be mostly in the south.

Any unlocked cell phone with local sim is the way to go

I would say that a unlocked QUAD-band GSM cell phone with a local Sim is the way to go. Or you can buy a cheap dual-band phone locally it will be unlocked and on the 900/1800 bands.

A local SIM is definitely the way to go if you're staying for a year!

You have two options: buy an unlocked phone (or get your current phone unlocked) at home then buy a Vietnamese SIM here. Or, buy a cheap phone in Vietnam (about $25). Most expats do the latter especially as petty theft is a problem here, like most cities.

I have used Mobiphone for the last 8 years and am happy with the service, especially when they regularly give a 100% bonus when recharging the prepaid card. For some reason Mobiphone and Viettel don't communicate well together and messages between Mobiphone and Viettal phones can take up to 24 hours to arrive.
