I think I will go in the summer after reading all of the above. Perhaps the 2nd week in August and maybe do one night in Vegas to begin with, then do Grand Canyon etc on our way back round towards the end of the hol at the end if August, that way hopefully more kids will be back in school?

Is Tijuana really that bad, is there nothing decent say 30mins outside of it maybe? I'm hoping there is a nice hotel with a pool for a day/night. So tempted just to pop across the border to reminisce about my time over there.

FWIW, Tijuana has a hopping food scene - so says media/restaurant blogs, I haven't experienced it myself...so if keen on trying some exciting restaurants, it may be worth the trip...if not, perhaps head down to Ensenada??

From downtown San Diego, the Red Trolley Cars run the light rail line all the way to the US-Mexico
border. You can take this and leave the rental car in the US. Then just walk across the border and
walk to Avenue Revolucion-- Tijuana's main shopping street. You can also hop in a cab if it's an off-hour
but the walk to downtown has lots of pedestrians. For hotels with swimming pools, there's the Hotel Lucerna
or (believe it or not) the Marriott Tijuana. It's possible you might meet Mitt Romney who just joined Marriott's Board of Directors, but don't let that ruin your holiday!

The Tijuana Marriott offers complimentary parking for those arriving with their pet dog strapped to the roof.

I love San Diego. Go to la joya and rent snorkels and swim in small beach with fish. Go to scripps aquarium. Go to Torrey canyons park for a hike and stop at the beach. Stay in little Italy at a bed and breakfast there and have Italian pastries and pizza or fresh fish. I liked San Jose too, but probably neater to go to area in palo alto near Stanford university, just south of San Francisco. Try to go to trader joe's for cheap wine and tour vineyards in California. Go see San Simeon on the drive up us highway 1 from San Diego. Consider reading sunset magazine for local advice. Take the BART in an Francisco or consider the coaster.

Thanks guys. We've now decided to fly into San Fran and drive to Vegas, then fly home from there. The hire car is going to be expensive dropping it back to a different city, but it will save three days of driving.

That route is popular enough that the fee may be waived. Not a guarantee though.

Hi there

Check out Trailfinders, they offer 'free' one way drop offs for California, Arizona and Nevada, which would suit your route.
Hope you have a great time, did a very similar route to yours a few years back, and benefitted greatly from the advice from the guys on this branch - some of who I note are still around - must be VERY old peeps now ; )

Yeah I guess people are always going to be driving back the other way so they dont mind being lumbered with extra cars.

Anyone got any tips for which areas to stay in in San Fran?

Also, which are the best parts of LA to stay in for site seeing etc? I've been researching but some of it seems to conflict. Thanks! I'm getting there!

San Francisco inexpensive motels w/ complimentary parking: Capri Motel; Cow Hollow Motor Inn or
check Hotels.com for discounted business hotels on weekends (Also Priceline.com) In Las Vegas, hotels
are deeply discounted on weekDAYS- avoid weekends if possible.
In Los Angeles with a car, I'd stay in Hermosa Beach or Manhattan Beach. Hollywood is good if you want
to park the car and take MetroRail (the subway) which connects to downtown LA. Downtown has discounted business hotels on the weekends. Cheers!

Must see Beverley Hills, Santa Monica, Downtown, Hollywood and have a night out on the Sinset Strip.
