how to get from Thirsk to Rievaulx...
Hi.On my trip to England in April, I want to visit Rievaulx Abbey. Problem is, I won't be driving and there doesn't seem to be any bus service there. I would be taking the train to Thirsk and starting from there. Is there some sort of shuttle that operates around North York Moors?

http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/rievaulx-abbey/directions . I would either attack it from Helmsley train station (far easier) or take a taxi. There is a shuttle bus around the Moors - google Moorsbus.3
Confirm Alan R - the starting point for Rievaulx is Helmsley, and apart from summer weekends, there is no public transport to Rievaulx Abbey - even then it leaves quite a walk as the roads are narrow,-, though only 10 minutes in a taxi. Loca ltransport info for all North Yorkshire at http://www.northyorkstravel.info/bus.html4
Helmsley > Rievaulx is a pleasant and not too demanding walk and Helmsley is not unpleasant place to stay (its a market town too). It has a youth hostel (which, incidentally I ran for two months back in the 80s). There was, and I dare say still is, a bus from York. However there MUST be a bus from Thirsk. Its been a long while since I up that way but Rievaulx DEFINITELY worth a vist. Which you know already ;o)5
#4 - no there aren't any direct buses from Thirsk to Helmsley. You can occasionally get a connection at Easingwold - just look at the website attached to my previous reply. York - or possibly Pickering if you can get there - are the best places to set out for Helmsley. Agree however, on a nice day it is a very pleasant if slightly hilly walk from Helmsleyto Rievaulx .- I did it in September6
Moorbus only runs March to October - and even then, only on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Next year's timetable won't be out until February (see http://www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/visiting/public-transport/moorsbus )That N Yorks transport website mike9 refers to should tell you all you need to know.
If you're heading for Riveaulx, then make sure you also see the temples at Riveaulx Terrace (confusingly, owned by the National Trust, rather than English Heritage). Great views of the Abbey from up there: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/rievaulx-terrace/
Not too far away, there's also Nunnington Hall, which is interesting, and on a direct bus from Helmsley: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nunnington-hall/ (see 194 timetable here: http://www.northyorkstravel.info/timetable/Bluezone.pdf )
