Proof of Onward Travel Dilemma
Hi allMy boyfriend and I are planning to do a 6-12 month South and Central America trip. We’re flying into Buenos Aires and would like to fly out of either Costa Rica, Havana or Cancun as all offer really cheap one way tickets back to London.
Our problem is that we don’t want to commit to buying a return as we want some flexibility, and although an open jaw ticket would allow us to provide proof to all countries we visit that we are in fact coming back home, we’re not keen on this option either as we’d still have to pay an increase in fare if we change our ticket - some flights are extortionate coming back from Costa Rica at the end of the year and we’re going on a very tight budget.
So….are immigration officials only after proof of onward travel out of their own country (e.g. if we had a bus ticket from Argentina into Chile, will they not care as long as we’re off their soil), or do they want something a bit more substantial, like a flight out of the continent?!
To enable us to get a one way ticket whenever to come back to London, I was thinking of getting the cheapest flight we can find (e.g. Costa Rica to Managua) for sometime late next year with the intention of just using the paperwork to show immigration control in all the countries we visit, not with the intention of actually using it.
Can that be done??! Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Indeed. This question is asked every 2 days more or less and in fact is usually responded in the guidebooks too. Arriving at Argentina, no border official will ever bother to see an exit or onward ticket. But your airline could deny you to board. If you call your airline they could say, Yes you need it or No, not necesary, but the one in charge at the airport could deny you to board anyway. And if somebody insists in real burocratic rules an exit ticket from another country could not be enough. As often adiviced and also written in some guidebooks you can solve this problem very easily buying a fully refundable ticket from BA to Santiago, Montevideo or Porto Alegre. You can do this over the web on the page of the airline directly or any online agency like Expedia, Ebookers, STA, Opodo etc. etc.. If you use your creditcard, most likely you never pay anything more than 5 or 10 USD of the booking fee. You can buy this ticket the same day you fly to BA or the day before and you can return it immediately after landing. You will get the money in your card again within a few days
