Proof of Onward Travel Dilemma

Hi all

My boyfriend and I are planning to do a 6-12 month South and Central America trip. We’re flying into Buenos Aires and would like to fly out of either Costa Rica, Havana or Cancun as all offer really cheap one way tickets back to London.

Our problem is that we don’t want to commit to buying a return as we want some flexibility, and although an open jaw ticket would allow us to provide proof to all countries we visit that we are in fact coming back home, we’re not keen on this option either as we’d still have to pay an increase in fare if we change our ticket - some flights are extortionate coming back from Costa Rica at the end of the year and we’re going on a very tight budget.

So….are immigration officials only after proof of onward travel out of their own country (e.g. if we had a bus ticket from Argentina into Chile, will they not care as long as we’re off their soil), or do they want something a bit more substantial, like a flight out of the continent?!

To enable us to get a one way ticket whenever to come back to London, I was thinking of getting the cheapest flight we can find (e.g. Costa Rica to Managua) for sometime late next year with the intention of just using the paperwork to show immigration control in all the countries we visit, not with the intention of actually using it.

Can that be done??! Any advice would be much appreciated.
