I've heard that the hotels and theme parks in Florida have inaugurated secret anti-python programs to protect unsuspecting children."Mommy, mommy, there's a worm in the swimming pool and he just swallowed Billy!"

Yeah Willy, but snakes aren't the only problem. This happened in Texas, but can easily happen in Florida too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM5IS-ewHDI18

Disneyland in Anaheim has coyotes. What could possibly go wrong? Never mind the mountain lions.

In the Pacific NW they call 'em cougars, and they can jump over a bus. The long way. You know you're being attacked when you feel your neck being broken.20
Have you priced out (on homeaway or the like) a house on the beach, with a pool, in July, in areas with good day-excursion options? They ain't cheap. You'll find that prices decrease as you get further from the largest cities, so check places like the Florida Panhandle and South Carolina.Microclimates near the sea vs. inland varies widely. That's why people pay to be near the beach in July...

Wow! That's as diverse a range of opinions as can get. Thank you heaps for your individual tips, and must confess that currently California has emerged with a slight edge over Florida (though not because of the location, but merely the time if year we will be traveling). That said, purchased the Lonely Planet guide books for both States this weekend, so I guess come what may, Lonely Planet is the 'winner' out of all this! Thanks again folks, as not only your tips, but links and location references have proven invaluable in our forward planning.

With all the things you can do in California, you may need a post vacation vacation when you get back to Germany. I believe the Swiss and the Germans called this vacation as 'Anruf im kranken.'If you're into sailing, Americas Cup race will be happening in SF in 2013.
