Non touristy places around Ho Chi Minh City

Hi,

My boyfriend and I are planning two weeks trip to Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh City at the end of March. Could you please recommend some non touristy places in the area. The places where you could meet real people with their real life? Maybe you know where it the possibility to stay at some private places.

Thanks in advance for all the recommendations.

Plenty of places in the Mekong Delta would fit the bill.
(Not sure what you mean by 'real' people though)

It means people that are not living from tourism. For example I live in Croatia at the moment and there are so many places where you have people orientated on tourism only. They are not real Croats, they act for the purpose of the client... And the real people are as they are every day, do their jobs, etc... That is what I mean by real people.

Plenty of real people in Vietnam. HCMC is a large city do you think everyone makes money from tourists, it is not like Croatia. Just walk a few blocks away from tourist sites, you do not have to go far. Get out into the conuntryside plenty of people working on the land.

On Pham Nu Lao (one of the main backpacker strips), there is a large park/square where a lot of students hang out. Sometimes students will approach you and ask to speak to you to practice their english. You can talk to them for a while and if you like them, you can ask if they would like to go to a cheap, local restaurant and have something to eat. You can offer to pay for their meal - it will only be a few dollars. You can do this sort of thing throughout Vietnam and many other countries for that matter.

LOL.

There are 8 million people in Saigon, and maybe 1000 tourists. Even the touristy places aren't very touristy.

Why would you want to stay 2 weeks in HCMC? Few days there seem enough to me and then move on to Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc or Hue for example.

Cholon. The only ferringhi I spotted there were at the Chinese temples. There's even a "real" public transit bus from Pham Ngo Lao for "real" passengers.
