Lake Atitlan Yoga Supplies?Hello friends! I am staying in San Pedro for three months and am looking for a yoga mat! Willing to travel to nearby villages of either San Marcos or San Juan to acquire one. If anyone knows of any leads, I'd be most grateful! A traditional mat will be great, but I wouldn't mind a reed mat the correct size instead. Thank you very much!
¡Hola amigos! Muchas gracias!

Very hard to find any mats to buy around the lake... mats or props...you are better to get it in the US or in Guatemala city..

2How about a guatemalan petate. They make them in different sizes. And you can find them at any market around the lake. http://www.guate360.com/galeria/details.php?image_id=3406

3hi amanda: it's true. yoga props are currently very difficult to find/buy around the lake, though it wouldn't surprise me if some enterprising guatemalan discovered the demand and started selling them in one of the sports shops. as mentioned above, your best bet is (unfortunately) to bring your props with you or buy in guatemala city. san juan definitely won't have one; you might be able to find a used one in san marcos if you're lucky. if you're already at san pedro, i'd suggest making little "mat wanted" signs and posting them down by the dock to pana.
there are yoga classes most mornings near Zoola down a twisty little path (look for the signs for "San Pedro Yoga"); sometimes they have evening classes too. they have a few proper mats available for people to use during class -- but only about 5 mats, so if there are more than 5 people you're out of luck. the class also offers many petate mats (mentioned above), which will work in a bind (pun not intended) -- but i found them to be very uncomfortable: they keep you from being on the dirt, but they're pretty slippery and often bits of straw poke you. not ideal. i asked the instructor about getting my own mat/blocks, and she said to get in G.C. or bring from the states.

5i wanted to update this in case anyone else is looking: i noticed that san pedro's health store (right near the pana dock) is now selling a yoga-mat-like thing. it was being marketed as an "exercise mat" or something like similar, so be sure to check the dimensions to make sure it's not too short or narrow. they only had two in stock, but the health store is known for ordering products on demand -- so if you're here for awhile and need a mat, just ask if they can order one for you.
lately there have been more yoga options in san pedro. in addition to the 9am class mentioned above, there's now a 4pm yoga/meditation or chi-gong/meditation class at the same location. (check the signs for exact schedule.) there's also been a noon yoga class on the rooftop of the buddha bar; check at the bar for exact schedule.
