^Thank you for your advice; I do prefer the panel loading rather than top loading, but there aren't as many choices in a smaller capacity unfortunately. The REI Vagabond Tour 40 seems better suited for airline travel, as well as the MEC Supercontinent 45. Unfortunately there are no REI or MEC stores where I live, so I would not be able to try these on. So I'm still on the hunt as it were....

The vagabond is not a travel pack, the harness does not zip away. The Supercontinent 45 is a travel pack as is the Osprey I suggested. Do you have anywhere that sells Osprey? They are international unlike the REI and MEC's own packs.

Oo...I really like the look of the Osprey Farpoint 40! It looks like a nice balance of capacity, carry on, not overly flashy (which I like), and even has a detachable daypack which I didn't know when I first saw it. I am fairly certain that my local adventure store would sell osprey packs, so this has definitely moved to the top of my list. Thank you!!!

Also, I forgot another question: are the dimensions listed on websites with the bags full? I'm assuming yes, but thought I'd ask! :)

Where do you see a detachable day pack on it? I don't think there is one.

The dimensions listed are more or less when it is full. If you overstuff any pack it will stretch a bit beyond the given dimensions.

I didn't think it had a detachable day pack either, but the website below stated:
"A large pocket on the front of the Farpoint 40 can be detached entirely for use as a fully functional day pack." Maybe this was copied and pasted from the larger capacity version of this bag?

This website as well says a detachable daypack is included. I'll have to check it out in person and see for sure. It would be wonderful if it did, as it still looks incredibly streamlined!

Bummer! Must have been the larger capacity bags that have one. Oh well, I will definitely still try it on if my local hiking store has it. Thanks!

Oh wow! That is a great option! Being new to the "travelling with a backpack" scene...I didn't even know that existed. So thanks!

There is a lot of good backpacking gear that most who post here don't even know about. LOL
