Texan (hoping to) have lost his way in Dublin - YOUR favz

The 6 Ones

What's the craic everyone?

This is Jeff –I'm cruising over to Ireland on this Thursday and I wanted to learn a bit about the place before I hit the ground. I do this when I head somewhere new and interesting - I call it the 6 ones. If you could give me just one little answer for any of the below (or all of them) - your favorites for – Ireland. I've got a handy cut and paste at the bottom for efficiency!

Here is a compilation from other forums. Please let me know if the link does not work - sometimes it doesn't from 'overseas'... security residual no doubt from the Bush Homeland Security Administration =)

Go raibh maith agat,

Jeff

1. ONE tune... The latest and hottest Irish stuff on the charts … any Ireland artists that I
could find on YouTube, iTunes or even buy a CD of off of Amazon otherwise.

2. ONE Drink... I’ve had bottled Guinness and I know it must be piss so I’ll get my fill of that … but beyond Guinness … I always like to try the local ‘moonshine’ something made from grain or grass – even if it puts me on the couch for a few days.

3. ONE Dish... a local, traditional meal or food. I’ll eat about anything so if there is something really ‘strange’ to Americans I won’t ask what’s in it.

4. ONE Word/Phrase... a greeting, or something unique to Ireland in general. Something beyond hello, thank you, or goodbye. I am looking for something that a visitor could say that would make locals laugh – a kind of friendly slang.

5. ONE bit of news... what is going on in Ireland lately? Local/national items that have been in the
news and that will be good conversation topics.

6. ONE off the path…little-known place or thing to do a place off the path where one can get a real feel for the culture (something like the Aran islands perhaps).

Or anything else you’d like to add (books/websites/blogs included).

Cut and paste this:

1. ONE tune...
2. ONE Drink...
3. ONE Dish...
4. ONE Word/Phrase...
5. ONE bit of news...
6. ONE off the path…

1) Anything by U2. See http://www.inyourpocket.com/ireland/dublin/U2-Landmarks_70412f for U2 related landmarks,.
2) An Irish whisky, there are dozens to pick from
3) Beef in Guiness Stew. See http://www.lonelyplanet.com/ireland/travel-tips-and-articles/76596 for suggested restaurants.
4) "We don't serve English breakfasts, we serve Irish breakfasts."
5) Their economy is bollocksed. Like, really badly bollocksed.
6) Kilmainham jail. http://www.heritageireland.ie/en/dublin/kilmainhamgaol/

I'm not gunna give you one of each but some ideas.

1) Check out Damien Dempsey (Bustin' Out of Here), Brad Pitt Light Orchestra (Grace Jones), Christy Moore (Lisdonvarana), Saw Doctors (N-17). Check out youtube.
2) Check out smaller Irish brew options such as Galway Hooker and other Galway Bay brews (Black Sheep, Brew Dock or Against the Grain pub) or Porterhouse Brews (Porterhouse pubs in Nasauu St and Parliament St).
3) Boxty and calconnen. Not truly bizarre but traditional. Try black pudding, not very Irish but meets the requirement of a bit unusual.
4) "Geez, it is almost tropical out there".
5) Economy, yeah. Stay away from the abortion debate although that is big news. You're arriving the day after budget day.
6) St Michan's church vaults is one of the lesser visited sights in Dublin (they do about four or five tours a day and only about ten people at a time); you get to see and usually touch 'mummies'. Check out website for details. Windmill Lane is where U2 recorded their first music and lots of other music was recorded there too so that might be a place to visit but do it in daylight. It is a bit of a rough area.

Many thanks FW and Mark. I'm adding your suggestions to my list. Looking forward to the 'tropical' weather over there later in the week!

Haha that should def be interesting. I plan on loading up on tequila for the trip so I'll have to mix em up and give it the authenticity test. =)

Dia dhuit, a Jheff (?)...!

1. ONE tune...
2. ONE Drink...
3. ONE Dish...
4. ONE Word/Phrase...
5. ONE bit of news...
6. ONE off the path…

Sounds like John Lee Hooker on speed...

#5...you won't have any trouble with this as you're arriving the day after our government's annual, financial day-of-reckoning, known here as 'budget day'...that high-pitched hum you will hear as you take the first tentative steps down any Irish street will be the sound of over 4 million people whinging together, in perfect harmony...

#1...'Fairytale of New York' by The Pogues and Kirsty McColl is on it's 5th or 6th lap as the festive season's most-played track, so get ready for plenty of that...recent album releases by quality artists include Damien Dempsey and Julie Feeney...

#4...'Bolloxology'...stronger version of what you might refer to as 'bunkum', 'baloney' or 'hokum'...

For the others, inquire as you go...local knowledge and all that...if you read McCarthy's Bar (on your list), you'll see what I mean...

Maith an fear!...

One drink... the irish hot toddy (made with Port). Also Murphys instead of Guiness. Don't ask for blackcurrant cordial in it though (I only got away with that because I'm a girl, and it was just barely)
One tune... anything by the Pogues, the cranberries

Can't answer the rest because it's too long since I've been there.

With regard to #7's great idea, it is a great Xmas drink. Ask for a hot port; it is basically port, lemon, hot water and those little things they stick in the lemon. Murphys is a worthwhile alternative to Guinness as is Beamish and both are worth giving a shot.

2. ONE Drink... Beamish
3. ONE Dish... Coddle...dublin dish with sausage potato and onion
4. ONE Word/Phrase... Guten Tag, Wie Gehts.......german could be our national language next year
5. ONE bit of news... see above......the germans effectively own this country
6. ONE off the path…Loughcrew Megalitic tomb in County Meath

Thank you everyone - I'm back from Ireland and here are my favorites:

1. ONE tune... Anything by Original Rudeboys
2. ONE Drink... Sorry.... but I have to say Guinness - I stayed in a flat in the Liberties and could actually smell the malt in the flat. Fav Pub: Arthur's Pub in Liberties of Dublin... most dodgy pub: The Hilltop in the same
3. ONE Dish... Irish Breakfast and especially the black pudding park.
4. ONE Word/Phrase... "Getting the shift"... won't say how i got to know that one =)
5. ONE bit of news... did talk the abortion issue against advice and almost got into a scuffle over it.
6. ONE off the path… the drive through Mulls Gap between Killarney and Kenmare. The most gorgeous land I've seen in Western Europe.

thank you everyone
