Help with 13 day plan (sapa, diving, etc.)

Hi guys,
I'm trying to help a friend who's going to Vietnam with his wife in a couple of weeks.
They are in their mid thirties and have been to several destinations in Asia (India, Thailand, HK, Singapore, etc.).
They have 13 days, landing in Hanoi on Dec. 20 mid-day, leaving HCMC Jan. 1 in the evening.
Since they have such a short time, the 2 main focus points are the Sapa area and the best beach town/resort (where diving is available) they can find. Anything else they can fit in in a bonus.
Not much time left so please help perfect their plan!

Plan so far:
1. Land Hanoi, hotel, see the city
2. See the city, night train to Sapa
3. Sapa
4. Sapa
5. Sapa
6. ?
7. Arrive at beach
8-11. Scuba diving Course, beach time. Where?
12. Leave beach in morning, fly to HCMC, new years eve party, sleep HCMC
13. Leave luggage at hotel, tour the city, fly out at night

Questions:
General- Help me fill in the gaps in the itinerary
Sapa- sleep in town and take day trips to the villages or sleep in villages? 3 or 4 days?
Hue/Hoi An- Do they have time to stop at one of these places? which would be best?
Beach/diving- Best beach for a couple who are looking for a romantic, beautiful place where they can also get an open water diving course

If this is your friends first ever visit to Viet Nam then I would suggest at least two days in the extraordinary capital. Ha Noi is very beautiful and is a real culture shock to a first time visitor.

Is the beach so high up in their needs. I think that most people on this forum would say that places like Ninh Binh, (the inland Ha Long), the areas around Dong Hoi for the caves, and the Central Highlands around Da Lat are far more memorable than the coast.

Hi there!

I would like to give you a recommendation the Itinerary with details as below:
Plan so far:
1. Land Hanoi, hotel, see the city- Most the time relaxing in a hotel and look around
2. See the city, night train to Sapa- proper Hanoi city tour: a full day City tour with a visit to Ho Chi Minh Complex, containing the mausoleum of the nation's founder Ho Chi Minh, the Presidency Palace, Ho Chi Minh's house on stilts and the One Pillar Pagoda, whose origins date back to the foundation of city. Heading out of this area, we continue seeing Hanoi with the Temple of Literature well known as Vietnam's first university, the Museum of Ethnology which delays an excellent collection of 54 ethnic minorities of Vietnam and the peaceful lake of Hoan Kiem with its sacred temple. The beautiful West Lake and walk around shopping center of Old quarter.
3. Sapa: Check in to your hotel and enjoy breakfast. A 40 minute drive takes you to Tram Ton Pass at the height of 2047 meters above sea level (the highest pass in Vietnam) where great views are offered of the surrounding mountains and lush forests of the Hoang Lien National Park. From there you will trek 30 minutes through forest. Along the way you have many chances to see wild flowers. Trekking along the stream you will arrive the Love Waterfall . It is the best place for relax in Sa Pa then return Tram Ton and drive back to Sa Pa. In the afternoon you will visit Muong Hoa valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in northwest Viet Nam. Descending into the valley by foot you will see the largest terraced rice paddy in the Sa Pa area (If you visit the valley between May and October, there is a chance to experience and observe how the locals plant and harvest rice). The walk takes you from Lao Chai village of the Black H'mong minority to Ta Van village of the Zay minority, providing the opportunity to see the different traditions and costumes of the two ethnic minority groups. Return to Sa Pa by car. Overnight in Sa Pa.
4. Sapa:Depart from Sapa town by car to Lao Chai village, following the road down the hill. Views of the Muong Hoa valley and magnificent surroundings of mountains and rice terrace fields can be seen from this road. Along the road, people from many ethnic groups (H’mong, Zay, and Red Dao) are likely to be met, and there are stalls along the way that serve tea, fruits and sweets. Soon after turning off the main road and taking a local path, we will arrive in the Black H’mong village of Lao Chai, where you will experience the daily life of the villagers. After that, we walk from Lao Chai to Ta Van village, where the Zay hill tribes live. Here you take a rest and enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by your local guide in a local house. After lunch you trek up and downhill. Specially you will trek through bamboo forest then relax beside the waterfall. Explore the Red Dao village of Giang Ta Chai where you will also have the chance to see their daily activities. In the afternoon the car will pick you up for the return journey to Sa Pa.
5. Sapa:One of the truly authentic markets in the northwest of Viet Nam, Xin Cheng market offers a special and unique experience. An early departure from Sa Pa or Lao Cai station to Bac Ha traveling through the Viet Nam-China border area, you will enjoy amazing mountain vistas and a charming river. The activities of minority people are evident with corn plantations and terraced rice fields seen throughout the landscape. This panoramic route leads you to Xin Cheng, a colorful and special market for Flower H’Mong, Tay and Giay people who come to trade and exchange local products like tobacco, clothes, fruits, horses and buffaloes. The market itself is also a place for the young to meet and find partners, for the old to get away from life’s struggles, and for men to enjoy the traditional corn wine. Like a colourful festival of life, it is a happy time for all involved before heading back to their daily routine. Returning to Bac Ha at noon, we pass by the H’Mong King Palace to learn about the history and culture of the area. Transport to Lao Cai station as per your request. - overnight train to Hanoi
6. Flight to Nha Trang: You will take flight to the resort town of Nha Trang to spend several days in a seaside hotel/Resort overlooking beautiful Nha Trang Bay. Snorkel or dive among the coral reefs in crystal blue waters, hike nature trails, cool off in your private plunge pool, indulge in spa treatments or just relax on the white sand beach and admire the unspoiled mountain and sea views. Welcome pick up and transfer to your resort. Overnight in Nha Trang.
7. Nha Trang: take a boat trip cruising on the Nha Trang Bay to visit Tri Nguyen Aquarium on Mieu Island to enjoy hundreds of nice and precious marine creatures then continue the trip to Mun Island -the best island for snorkeling with lots of lives colorful corals and fish. Taking a fresh dinner at the Con Se Tre island before back to hotel. Overnight in Nha Trang.
8-11. Leave Nha Trang for HCMC: Arrive Ho Chi Minh City (Old Saigon, and now written up as HCMC). Greet at airport & transfer to hotel.

Afternoon: transfer to the main section of the old city, short stop at the classic Post Office, the Catholic Church called Notre Dame De Paris, visit to the former Presidential Palace, then shopping at Tay Son Lacquerware workshop or Binh Tay whole sales market. Accommodation at hotel in HCMC.

12. Leave beach in morning, fly to HCMC, new years eve party, sleep HCMC
13. Leave luggage at hotel, tour the city, fly out at night:

Cheer!
