Abandoned Aeroplane in Mongolia?

I short time ago i had someone tell me about the craziness of architecture in Mongolia, and describe an old aeroplane that had been 'built in' so to speak in Ulaanbataar, Mongolia. Apparently it had been left there and people built houses and buildings around it and it was stuck.
I'm actually going to be in Ulaanbataar soon, and if this exists i want to see it! Has anyone else heard of it, or seen it?
Or was this person just taking the piss...

Hi ................................ (keywords: Mongolia, abandoned Soviet, Russia, Russian, military, UB, China, Chinese)

I am not aware of an abandoned plane in UB.

Your friend is right about abandoned Soviet era military bases including abandoned air bases.
Last week on November 26 Mongolia celebrated it's independence from Chinese rule with the help of the Russians. From 1924 until the collapse of the Soviet union in 1990, Mongolia was under strong Russian influence. This included the establishment of several Soviet military bases in Mongolia.

See this photo1 and photo2 by Eric Lusito of the Soviet (Russian) MIG21 near Choir. This abandoned air base was the Soviet front line to protect Russia from China. It was part of the 126th Fighter Aviation Regiment. This base was operational from the 1970's until the 1990's.

See this map for more abandoned soviet era - towns, mines and military bases.

If you do visit any of these locations you are invited to share your findings.

Have a great time

Dan

That person was probably referring to the airplane visible from Dund gol road (47.90145,106.894596 on Googlemaps). Though the story I heard was that it's just an old airplane towed to that place "for educational purposes" by the school of mechanical engineering, before the area around got built up.

Either way, I wish I knew about those when I was there last year. Looks pretty cool.
