American Express Travelers Cheques still accepted?

When I went to buy Amex checks in the U.S., I found, to my surprise, that they are available in Canadian currency as well as U.S. I bought these in order to avoid the extra 10 percent penalty that has been discussed here. Maybe this is why we get conflicting reports as to whether Amex checks are docked the extra ten percent. Maybe it's the currency denominated in the check rather than the "American" in Amex?
