Google Maps

But I use a paper map from the rental agency, outside of San Jose, its really not that complicated...

google maps is ok for maps - but not for distances and directions. garmin navsat has the most accurate gps software for costa rica.

double check over at trip advisor - i have seen this question asked a lot of times and the answer is always "garmin navsat" - especially by professional drivers.

Half the fun of driving in CR is getting lost....thats my motto...I like the old fashioned way, a map, and off I go...its really a few main roads between each area, how lost can you get? Oh wait, dont ask my wife that, I got lost going to Rincon from Upala,,,haha

not sure how you could pull that one off, solohobo. from upala west on rt 4 is a straight shot to rt 1. south on rt 1 and turn for the road to rincon de la vieja -- well marked.

of course, if you were trying to do some sneaky thing to drive "the back way" into rincon de la vieja, you would get lost. (it's pretty much impossible)

actually, tcecchi, you may not need a gps, depending on where you are going. if you are going to the major tourist attractions (arenal, monteverde, manuel antonio, rincon de la vieja, beaches) - you won't have a problem finding your way. a good road map, such as the one from mapcr.com will be very helpful (you can get it at amazon). you can also look here for distances, travel times and directions: http://www.yourtravelmap.com
