Just wait until you arrive there and you will meet lots of backpackers in any hostel in Sydney. It's quite easy to find travel mates, especially if you stick to the east coast.3
Lucy, you will have no problem making plans as there are heaps of other backpackers doing the same thing. As far as transportation goes, I'd recommend the Greyhound Bus--it's relatively cheap and it's incredibly convenient. Otherwise, you can try to hitch rides with other backpackers, but it depends on your timeframe.7
also.. after Brisbane/Fraser Island/Whitsundays I'm looking to fly down to Melbourne and spend sometime there as well if that's something you're interested in! :)
