By Car to Kaliningrad

Does anyone know the rules for UK person driving own car to KALININGRAD? How long are you allowed to stay there at a time, and can repeat visits be made with car, and under what time limits/rules. Any advice about documents most welcome.

you need to get a russian visa, or you can get a 72 hour schengen visa, you usually need proof of hotel "invitation letter", as well as passport details etc..

as for the car, i am not sure

  • you need insurance valid in Russia, either your UK insurer issues a so-called "Green Card" valid for Russia (unlikely, UK insurers are crap with international matters) or you buy it at the border
  • you need an international driving permit (that requirement might have been abolished in the meantime, but I'd surely recommend it - not expensive and might save you from a few police extortions)
  • you need you car documents (can't remember how the document is called in the UK - V5?)
  • upon entering a customs declaration is issued which has to be returned upon exiting (don't know long you can take the car, probably depends on your visa, my guess is 30 to 90 days), you can't leave without your car
