If you intend to use one base and return each day, the likes of Granada, for example, is a three hour journey each way from Seville, whatever your transport. Morocco (if you mean a day trip to Tangiers, I counsel against) and Portugal (other than beaches) similar long days. So, as always, I suggest a two base (at least, as you have a month) approach.

I am not entirely sure what your 'safety' concerns are during Semana Santa in Seville. What you have are, mostly, traditional religious processionals over several days, and no 'wildness', as far as I am concerned. If this is about crime, you should be vigilant anywhere with a regular tourist presence.

Rents go through the roof during Semana Santa and most places are taken just after the celebrations of the previous year. So I suggest you check before going any further with that idea.

The idea of travelling in and out of Seville every time I wanted to make a day trip would be an additional deterrent for me. But that´s just me. Just remember, it´s a big city.

I would prefer to spend my 3 - 4 weeks in a small village and use that as a base to visit other places. If that appeals to you, send me a private message. I have lived in a mountain village near Ronda (Andalucía) for the past 5 years and may be able to advise you. Don´t worry - we don´t own any rental properties so I am not looking for a commercial angle here.

Is Seville a good choice to stay for a month?

If you want to spend a full month in only one city (soaking up the language, day to day life...), Sevilla would be a good option.
However, you should think if a city it's the best option for you to explore other areas of Andalucía (BTW, by public transport? with your own vehicle?). A (small) town could be better for that.

If you want to visit Sevilla and Granada, it would be a good idea to be based some time in both cities so your second option would be better.

I would skip Morocco and Portugal.

Thanks for your suggestions. I think even as I was writing my first post, my heart was telling me the better thing to do, is to stay in more than one location. Now, to figure out the details! I would love more information on the pueblos blancos, and trust me Tony_b, my preference would be a smaller town/village. The more my husband and I discussed what our ideal day for this trip would be like, it turns out we will be happy going to the market and buying food for lunch/ dinner, finding a park for the kids to play in, hanging out in a cafe or plaza talking to people. Extremely low key and with a 2 & 4 year old, we can't expect much more. I think our reservation about spending a large amount of time in a small village is lodging. When I was looking, I was finding more houses in the country than apartments suited for a family of 4. As lovely as that would be, I know we would be more apt to stick around the country house as opposed to getting out and interacting with other people. Perhaps I'm not looking in the right places online for lodging? If I can find proper accommodations, I am all for renting a car, touring the smaller towns and maybe even getting in a hike..
