Transportation Basel Mulhouse- Barcelona and Ferries to Greece

Hello,

I am comparing the cost of two options of itineraries, and there are two questions I'd like to ask :

1. How to get to Barcelona from Basel Mulhouse Freiburg Switzerland the cheapest way?

2. What are the starting points of neighboring countries to get to Greece by ferry?

Thanks for the reply

Probably, if you book it well in advance, a low cost flight. Easyjet has direct flights and it's a good bet.

What are the starting points of neighboring countries to get to Greece by ferry?

What country(ies) exactly are thinking about? Italy? Turkey?

Hello Anillos,

I am searching any possible point of departure to Greece which has the lowest fare. Is Italy the only country that one can access via ferry/bus besides Turkey? I am planning to Thessaloniki, which port is closest to Thessaloniki?

Thanks

Thessaloniki (cheap easyjet and skywork flights from Switzerland) has a port, from where ferries go to Lemnos - Lesbos - Chios - Samos - Ikaria.
If you want to start in Italy by ferry, you can go either to Igoumenitsa or Patras and go on from there by bus to Thessaloniki
or
you can take the Ancona - Durres ferry and go on by bus through Albania:
via Elbasan - Ohrid - Bitola - Florina - Thessaloniki, resp
via Elbasan - Korce - Konitsa - Thessaloniki

You can access by bus from all the neighboring countries (i.e.: Albania, FYROM Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey).
By ferry, although I'm not an expert in sea travel, I would say that Italy and Turkey are you main (only?) options.

.... yes, these are the only options, except the local Saranda (Albania) - Corfu (Greece) ferry, which doesn't make any sense if you want to go to another place in Greece than Corfu.
The once frequent ferries between Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Egypt, Lebanon, Ukraina stopped to run 5 to 30 years ago (according to the destination).

Hello all,

Thank you for answering. I only have schengen visa, so my departure to Greece should be a country which accept a schengen-visa tourist. Italy is the only one I know for the point of departure to Greece, but any country which accept a schengen visa tourist will be possible. Turkey is too far, I dont know whether Bulgaria accept schengen visa or not.

@Neckverd, what is the port in Italy that goes to Igoumenitsa or Patras, and what is the nearest airport to that port in Italy?

Ferries to Igouminitsa or Patras leave from Venice, Ancona, Bari and Brindisi.

Thank you Templeton. I have checked the ferry from Venice to Patra and Igouminitsa, to Igouminitsa is faster and save time for around 7 hours with the same rate as the ferry to Patra.

Any body has information on how to get to Barcelona or Monaco from Basel Mulhouse? I am still comparing the expense between two different destination : to Greece or to Barcelona. Does any one know a carpooling website that the service is borderless? Most website I search is only for one country routes

As I told you in #1 a flight with Easyjet will probably be your best option (unless you are able to find a free ride by car).

From Basel you could simply take the train, Monaco is ugly and expensive also the opposite direction if going from Basel to Venice, matter of fact you can also take a train from Basel to Barcelona, if you book well in advance 92 days before departure you get good rates.

Also do check the airlines #3 mentioned, skyworks has a flight from Bern to Thessaloniki for 105,-- € and easyjet Basel -Thessaloniki flies for as low as 30,-- CHF.
http://www.easyjet.com/EN/Booking.mvc#tab3, http://www.flyskywork.com/en.

http://www.mitfahrzentrale.de/index.php?landnr=D&lang=GB, maybe you find someone going your direction here http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml, http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD these two are for the train, first one is for german trains but as far as I know covers all of europe.

Thank's so much Templeton.

My options are :
1. Nederland-Basel Mulhouse-Monaco-Barcelona-Lourdes-Nederland
2. Nederland - ??? - Santorini or Thessaloniki - Nederland.

??? = a departure point which has the lowest flight fare from Nederland and to Greece (by bus/ferry)

I have also checked mitfahrzentrale before posting my questions and there was no one going to the chosen destinations on the dates I am traveling, but I will also check the other link you gave. Thank you.

Besides that, I am thinking the alternative using Inter Rail global pass. Is it also valid from the very beginning of the journey - from and to Nederland? And, is it valid for Thalys too?

I am thinking the alternative using Inter Rail global pass.

Take a look here first. In addition, there aren't international trains to/from Greece.

Yes Anillos,

what I mean by Inter Rail is not for option 2 (to Greece), but for option 1.

Thank you for the link, it is a very complete information, but I am still unclear whether it is also valid for Thalys from France to Nederland, and whether it can also be used from the very beginning of the journey (a country of residence) or it must be from outside the resident country.

Interrail Global pass isn't valid for your country of residence (AFAIK).
