Hi all,

I need to travel from Mendoza Argentina to Santiago Chile over the new year-I'd really like advice on:
1-safest, economical route
2-where to stay near international airport in Santiago for flight out on 2nd jan that is economical?

Sound advice much appreciated

Thanks guys

My areas of travel are Argentina to Chile-both in South America so I was hoping posting in this branch would be suitable?

1. The cheapest way is to get the bus, which takes about 7 hours. It's a spectacular route over the Andes.

2. Don't know any places to stay near the airport. I'd stay in the city and find a hostel that could arrange an airport transfer, or is close to public transport. Have a look at HostelWorld or HostelBookers for info.

The border crossing is a nightmare around NYE as people from Argentina start their holidays or come over for the fireworks on NYE in Valparaíso. I would think things will be very crowded from Friday the 28th, with packed buses and delays of up to 5 hours at the border. That is how it has been for the last couple of years. There will be fewer buses on the 1st. If you have a flight to catch on the 2nd, leave more than a night's buffer before crossing as the pass can close because of bad weather. It usually only does it once or twice in summer but you might have the bad luck for it to be the day you want to travel.

Very good advice from vnrose, worse time of the year to have a tight schedule. BOOK BUS NOW over the pass, on either plataforma10 or tickets-on-line. Usually there is no problem getting tickets 3 or 4 days in advance here, but not for this time.
