thanks for all the helpful replies! It seems like the mule trips are booked well in advance, so unlikely for us. Still lots to do there.

Looking forward to visiting the USAnians.

There is also the west rim, but I don't think anyone here will recommend it. It's like the amusement park version of the Grand Canyon.

Some people like amusement parks.
I don't begrudge the Hualapai the money they earn from the West Rim. They may be the poorest tribe in North America and they certainly need the money. The West Rim seems to be a commercial hit. Good for them. Just be informed about what you should expect if you go there. It can be fun. It is NOT Grand Canyon National Park.

good to know. I think the south rim will be the best bet with the limited time we have there.

Now we just have to find accoms- we're considering Sedona or even perhaps Cottonwood. Any suggestions? I like the idea of renting homes personally, so vrbo will be our search method.

If you mean accommodations while you are at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, see if you can get lucky with the accommodations inside Grand Canyon Village in the park. Plan B is Tusayan AZ, Plan C is Flagstaff AZ, Plan D is Williams AZ, and Plan whatever is all of those other places. Even Flagstaff is a long commute.
