Visiting Tequila and Magdalena
I'm just coming to the Guadalajara area for a long weekend with my teenage daughter, and I want to see Tequila and maybe buy some opal jewelry in Magdalena.Since we plan to head to Lake Chapala afterward, I'm thinking maybe we should just go to Tequila directly from the airport as our first stop.
Should I hire a cab or rent a car? I don't mind driving in Mexico but sometimes the signage is so atrocious it's very frustrating to get lost. Plus, if I'm drinking tequila....well, you get it.
We could also take a bus, but we'll just be getting off a red-eye so probably not that interested in a grueling trip with our luggage in tow.
Any idea what it might cost to rent a cab to take us to Tequila, wait while we tour, take us to Magdalena and then drive us to Lake Chapala? Thanks! Any tips about other aspects also welcome.

At the airport or in any major hotel, arrange for the bus tour to the town of Tequila. It is a good tour that stops along the agave plantations to show you haw the agave is harvested followed by a tour of a distillery (probably Cuervo) to see the entire distilling process and finishing up in the tasting room of course. Then lunch at a local restaurant on the way back - all in all a very nice day.

I think you can forget the cab. If I'm reading the map correctly, from the airport to Tequila is pushing 100km and another 20km to Magdalena. I'd either take a tour or rent a car. Bearing in mind that you will have to drive through/around Guadalajara to get to Tequila.Lake Chapala is literally just "over the hill" from the airport. Only about 30km - but in the opposite
direction from Tequila.

No problem driving around Guad, as long as you give it time. It is a huge city. Once on the correct road west, or northwest, you will find yourself on a fine freeway.and with good maps and direction you will enjoy the countryside, often bathed in blue agave. In Magdalena you can go from shop to shop to look at their offerings. On to Tequila, or a little farther up the road towards Guad to the Heuradura tequilla distillery where they have been in the business for nearly 150 years, saving some of the older building to show how tequilla used to be made.The sign of the horseshoe has some good spirits awaiting you in the tasting room! We know a great taxi driver in Guadalajara who you could check with to see what he would charge. His name is Raul, he speaks English, and his phone number is 3331197473. This is his cell phone so I'm not sure what prefixes you would need to call from your location. The Tequila Valley is beautiful, good luck.
