I'll be going that way myself in a few weeks. Will just have to ask about how it is locally. From going between Sinai and Cairo several years ago, I remember that there were a lot of police roadblocks along the way ... which would mean it should be pretty safe. But who knows? Things are safe until something happens usually I guess.
If it gets really dangerous in a place they will often just not let tourists go that way, or make them go as part of a convoy with police escorts like happens down in the south between Luxor and Hurghada.

I live in Dahab. I do not have a crystal ball to know the future but right now everything is OK here in Sth Sinai. Business as normal. Egypt is protecting the tourists with increased security. You'll experience many checkpoints from Cairo to Taba on the bus. This should give you peace of mind. However the constant stops do make the journey quite long. If anything the checks get annoying if you're trying to sleep.I suggest you break the journey up by travelling from Cairo to Dahab (9 hours). Rest a couple of days, swim, snorkel and relax here. Then continue to Taba to walk over the border into Israel.
There are 5 buses daily from Cairo to Dahab run by East Delta Travel and leave from Abbassyia Station. You can reach the Abbassyia Station from the airport or city center by taxi (LE25-30)
Air-conditioned buses to Dahab leave at 8:00, 13:00, 18:00, 22:00 and midnight. The journey takes 9 hours. The bus will drop you off in Dahab City where you can catch a taxi to your hotel.
A private car from Cairo to Dahab will cost about LE900 and takes 6 hours
A shared van will cost about LE150each, depending on how many people are travelling. More people, lower price.

Or you can take a shared taxi from Cairo to Taba which is faster than the bus, more comfortable and about the same price.Good luck.

Do you know how much a shared taxi from Cairo to Taba will cost? And how does one book or find it? Also, would it be safer than getting a bus? Thanks :)5
I paid 100LE when I split the taxi with two others. If there are four of you it would be less.Your hostel should be able to help you find others to share the taxi with. They may have others there who want to head that way or could contact other hostels looking for people to share with you.
I don't think there is a safety issue either way.
Good luck.
