Day tour to pacaya volcanoWe are a family of 4 and we are wandering what is the preferred way to visit Pacaya volcano near Antigua.
By our own (we have a car with a driver) or by a guided tour?
And if by a tour which one?

4I climbed Pacaya two weeks ago, as we are on a long trip and budgeting, we did a cheap option of $8 per person, we had a guide but it was a simple trek up, toast some marshmellows and back down again.
There are more expensive options where you can spend longer and see more things I believe, are you staying in Antigua? Old Town Outfitters seemed very professional, but prices were much higher.
hopefulist is correct, you can´t actually go right to the top as it´s too dangerous at the moment, my cousin climbed it in 2010 and I think it has erupted since.

6IMO if you're planning on having your own car you should be able to have your car driver wait for you at the entrance to the park. And that way you'll have the freedom of leaving for the park as early or as late as you feel like. Because you don't know if the shuttle is going to be full and you and your family will be riding crammed like sardines. Then they start going around town picking up other people. And sometimes they're ready, sometimes they're not and have to wait for them. At the entrance you pay your entrance fee and that's where as Bill says you can hire a guide and rent walking sticks. Don't forget to bring the marshmallows.

8Even though the lava stopped flowing down the volcano slopes as it used to be since the last eruption a few years back.
Hiking an active volcano should still be something good for the kids to talk about back home at the school.
This is what you can expect to see nowadays. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGNRqw_Hj2E You can still toast marshmallows on lava vents on the ground. Now on this other video you can still see lava rocks rolling down the slopes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSlWUuViFWU
