San salvador airport to Zacatecoluca
Two of us will be landing early afternoon at San Salvador in late Jan after a long flight from the UK via Miami, then making our way to Nicaragua over the next 2/3 days. From the map it looks as if going to San Salvador itself is a backward move, so thought perhaps we'd head for our first night in Zacatecoluca. Does this make any sense, and how would we best do it? It looks as if we could figure out buses from there on to San Miguel and then get a fast bus on to Managua. Or could we? All advice very welcome - thanks.1
Maybe not a good idea... Go to San Salvador, and then take bus at "Terminal de Oriente" (East Terminal) in San Salvador... (don't stay near "Terminal de Oriente" though, as it is not a very good neighbourhood.)2
I took the bus from Usulutan to Zacatecoluca. If you are doing this the other way, there are many buses on to San Miguel.Near the bus stop in Zacatecoluca, there was a Biggest and other eating places...you won't go hungry.
Of course, if you decide to go over to San Salvador instead, there are many more deluxe bus choices. I walked from El Centro to the Terminal del Oriente in San Salvador a number of times. It is not a nice area, but aside from one guard dog who came out barking at me (thank goodness the owner was around to pull it back!) nothing else happened. Good luck.

I would suggest heading into San Salvador, and if not planning tyo see any of El Salvador(which is a mistake) take the TicaBus onto Managua. If you purchase your ticket first and pay in Cash the hotel Meson de Maria give a good discount and it is in the nicer zona rosa part of the city. It is now possible to take a boat from La Union or El Cuco beach to Potosii Nicaragua and then a bus on to Leon-Then Managua.Have a good trip

We are in El Tunco at the moment and are about to head that way and to the border. We are told it can be done. Chicken Buses. The one thing that I have found over the last few weeks is that the tourist shuttle from El Salvador (San Salvador or Tunco) to Leon books up about three or four days in advance so book early. As well prices vary especially in Tunco so shop around.
