Sicliy Itinerary - Comments please

Hi everyone,

I'm traveling to Sicily with my husband and mother-in-law in early January and wonder if anyone would be kind enough to comment on the itinerary we have made. The three of us are pretty different. My husband is a photographer, so he likes interesting-looking places and people. My mother-in-law is 71 years old and cares mostly about food. I'm interested in both food and photography, but also love art. When I did my itinerary I based it on a tour itinerary, and added and deleted the things that interest me or doesn't interest me. I know it's a bit of a hectic schedule, but we love traveling like this (my husband and I, at least) and have no problems cutting out a part of the itinerary if we feel lazy one day and just want to stay put.

Originally, I was planning to rent a car for the whole trip, but now I'm thinking we will rent one on Day 4, as I think that the daytrips from Palermo are doable with npublic transportation. Let me know what you think.

Day 1– Wednesday – Fly Rome – Palermo (land at 1 p.m.) (Palermo 3 nights)
Day 2 – Thursday – Day trip from Palermo to Monreale & Cefalu
Day 3 – Friday – Day trip to Trapani / Erice
Day 4 – Friday – Drive to Agrigento (stay 1 night)
Day 5 – Saturday – Drive to Ragusa & Modica (stay in Siracusa 3 nights)
Day 6 – Sunday – Daytrip to Noto
Day 7 – Monday – Stay in Siracusa
Day 8 – Wednesday – Fly Catania - Rome

Thanks.

ok.

Day 2...a day trip to Monreale or Cefalu is feasible.A day trip to both is not...they are in different directions, with different forms of transport.

Depending on where you are staying in palermo you will need to take 1 or 3 buses each way to Monreale...and buses and trains each way to Cefalu.

Day 3...a day trip to both is a long day,but possible..bus to Trapani...have a look around..cable car up to erice and repeat on the way down.

The rest is possible but a LOT of driving...much of it on small and slow roads. One day driving Agrigento-Ragusa-Modica-Siracusa will be like 8 hours of driving and very little time to see anything of Ragusa or Modica.

Day in Noto and day in Siracusa fine...and driving to Catania Airport too

BTW don't you want to see anything in Palermo itself? there is plenty of interesting stuff...the markets are great for food and photography, and there are some very nice museums, galleries etc. as well.

By the time you check in etc. on day 1 it will be too late to do any of that..esp.the markets will be over by lunch time.

I'd recommend at least one day in Catania with trip to Etna

Like Luca, i don;t understand why you're in Palermo, yet you're not spending any time there... seems like a waste. Drop the day trips- except Monreale which is practically a suburb of Palermo.
same with Siracusa.

Thanks everyone for yur input. Very helpful. It seems like I have to re-jigger my trip a little bit. Perhaps drop Monreale/Cefalu. Stay in Ragusa one night. Switch Day 6 & 7. So it would look like this:

Day 1– Wednesday – Fly Rome – Palermo (land at 1 p.m.) (Palermo 3 nights)
Day 2 – Thursday – Palermo
Day 3 – Friday – Day trip to Trapani / Erice
Day 4 – Friday – Drive to Agrigento (stay 1 night)
Day 5 – Saturday – Drive to Ragusa & Modica (stay 1 night in Ragusa or Modica)
Day 6 – Monday – Drive to Siracusa (stay in Siracusa 2 nights)
Day 7 – Sunday – Daytrip to Noto
Day 8 – Wednesday – Fly Catania - Rome

I haven't added any time in Catania/Etna due to time restraints, and because of all I've read they are the least interesting. A matter of taste, of course.
