As previous post, only place in SEA where we found ourselves in trouble was Burma. Of course, if you want you choice of place then you will need to book ahead but if you are not bothered then turning up is fine, even on xmas and NY. If you are looking for a place in Siam Reap then head to Mandalay Guesthouse which is cheap, clean and the staff are amazing.

You can see my post on it in my blog.

Like the others have said, no need to book ahead. There are so many guesthouses in the main centres there is no need to worry. The only time is if you have a preference. Everyone has their favorite spots, just find somewhere you like.

I'm travelling then and I did book ahead, however I'm only travelling for 2 weeks, also if i cancel the booking i'll lose a couple of dollars at worst. However my norm is to not book in advance and based on my experience of booking there appears to be plenty of options right now. Of all the places Kampot was the one that seemed to have the least availability in early Jan, especially in the cheaper places in Kampot itself.

I think you should book rooms in advance especially in Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) because they are in high season and nice hotels might be fully booked. Going around Siem Reap is easy, you can rent taxi from hotel, it is cheap and convenient.

We enjoyed staying at 7 candles guesthouse. They are connected to the wonderful NGO "theplf.org"

If you want to visit the islands, you will be coming to Sihanoukville. It would be a very good idea to book in advance if you intend to be here during the Xmas/New Year week.Rooms are very hard to come by during this period.
