Looking for sun come February - where to go?
Hi there:Well ...we are back in Vancouver and the cold is setting in. Was just at Costco and they are salting the parking lot so you just know what's coming. By February we are going to be desperate for an escape to the sun. From here the usual escape is either Mexico or Hawaii but been there, done that often enough. Life is short and lots to see.
We have 4-6 weeks and could fly out of Vancouver or Seattle. We travel frugally and would like the best bang for our buck but things are going pretty well these days so its not the deciding factor. That said we were just in Africa for the summer so the travel account is not flush enough for a GRAND trip. More of a cheap escape is what we have in mind. What do we like to do? See great scenary, wildlife, different cultures. We are NOT sit on the beach with a beer kinds. Health is pretty good these days so any kind of travel short of trekking works. We love road trips, like to stay on the move. Love boats and beaches and the wind in our hair ...what there is of it :)
In terms of warm weather places we've already been to SEA (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand), Cook Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Ecuador, southern US. We are thinking of maybe island hopping in the Caribbean (not the usual all-inclusive way to the Caribbean).
Your best bets for beating the Canadian winter, s'il vous plait.

Have you looked into the Dominican Republic? I've never been but I have friends who have and loved it plus I've researched it a couple times and it sounded like a great 2 week trip. Rent a car and explore.3
Central America has some some very cost effective options. Culture, wildlife etc.5
I have been going through a similar "where should I go" phase and finally decided on Sri Lanka. It seems like the perfect time to visit that country. I'll spend about four weeks there and a couple of weeks in India (I've already travelled around India).I have travelled extensively in Mexico and Central America and think there are lots of great places to visit there, either by riding one of their buses or renting a car. I also rented a car in Cuba and it is without doubt a fascinating destination (they are still in the revolution phase--the billboards are quite remarkable!). Six weeks in Cuba would be too long for me though.

'ahem'......Feb in OZ would be great ! especially the coast from Below Sydney down to Victoria, a good 4-6 weeks!8
If you are interested in culture, and have only been to the Cook Islands in the South Pacific, try one of the Melanesian countries: Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia or Papua New Guinea. Fiji is more touristy and less Melanesian, though may be easier to get to. All of these countries are geographically much bigger thn the Cooks, offering a variety of experiences over 4-6 weeks10
Thanks for the ideas people, keep them coming. Would love to return to Australia redwhite but the cost of airline tickets make it less than a "cheap escape". We will return someday though .....to lounge on your patio, sipping wine and nodding off together in the sun, reliving the glory days when we bumped our individual ways around the world on a bus with no springs :)
