Transportation in Georgia

Hello, I am planning a trip to Georgia in the new year and I was wondering what your thoughts are on the train there? I would like to take the train around the country but I was wondering how reliable and efficient it is? Thanks in advance.

I caught an overnight train from Tbilisi to Batumi, sleeping in a four-person couchette cabin. It's not really any different from travelling in couchettes in any western European country, although I notice that most of the other passengers tended to hang around the hallways a lot more during the early part of the trip.

It was considerably slower travelling by train than the marshrutka trip I'd taken to get from Batumi to Tbilisi in the first place, but then it was far more comfortable and I was able to sleep through it. I notice that they now have daytime trains that are quite fast, and match the speed of marshrutkas...

There is only one main line, and very few trains, although they are good. For most places, or at most times, you need to teka busses or minibusses.

Here you can see the schedule and frequency of train transportation in Georgia. The quality of trains generally improved in recent years.

Hi,

The trains here are fine but I have found in the year I have been in Tbilisi that it is often much more convenient to get a bus (well marshrutka - minibus). The costs are never high to go anywhere and more often than not faster than the trains. With trains it is often advisable to buy your ticket a few days in advance

Good evening,

Even if you are thinking to use the train only for night travels (Zugdidi for Svanetia or Batumi for the coast or even going to Turkey), it's possible (and realistic) to use it during the day but it's better to keep it only for short trips (Gori-Borjomi or Kutaisi-Gelati)
