What to see in Chiang Mai & surrounding areas

So I decided to use the city as my base (thanks guys for your input) and now I'm trying to figure out what to do/see.

What are in your opinion "must sees" in the city? There are a lot of Wat(s) - which were your favs? Which market did you like best? River cruise - yes/no?

What about for daytrips out of the city? Do you have anything to add to Captain_Bob's recommendations:

Do daytrips out of the city to Doi Inthanon (highest mountain, waterfalls, gardens, villages), Sankamphaeng (hotsprings and beautiful hilly scenery), Mae Taeng (rafting and elephant camps), Mae Rim (elephant camp, horse riding, orchid/butterfly farm, monkeys snakes and crocs), Doi Suthep-Pui (famous temple, hilltribe villages, botanical gardens), etc.

I know everyone have different tastes but I'm curious.

Hi,

Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon do not have to be day trips. I personally would spend just a little time in/on each.

The reason for daytripping is because we waited too long to book during a popular time and are paying more than planned. Also we had to pay in full for this place and unless it's something magnificent don't really want to double up.

Wat Chedi Luang is atmospheric at dawn and dusk (and walkable from your place). Doi Suthep is the most famous in Chiang Mai and worth it for the views alone. The Warorot Market (Kad Luang) out by the river is interesting. Go inside the building by day, street market after dark. During festivals the Sunday evening market usually extends to other days as well, along Ratchadamnoen road from Thaphae gate.

Of course plenty else to see and do in town this week...

Hi Ria,
C bob has some good advice
there are so many places to stay and things to eat and do.
There are many well known places but if u can get a scooter and get off you will find so
much more subtle local fare also.

Doi Suthep is great but there are other more hidden temples on the mountain
the road over the top is fun too and you come out near a lake where they
sell fish on stilted tables over the shallows.

For coffee shops u have dozens that offer great coffee
and a few hidden in the jungles.

enjoy it and let me know if i can help:

You can do Chiang Mai Zoo and up to Doi Suthep.
Doi Inthanon is worth visiting so don't miss this.
For Temples: Wat Phra Sing , Wat Chedi Luang , Wat Phan Tao, Wat Prasat,
Wat Chedi Chet Yot.
At night can do Chiang Mai Night Safari, or dinner at the riverside or walk at night bazaar.
For Chang = elephant(in thai we call Chang) go to Elephant Nature Park at Sridom Chai Road.
