Cheap gift ideas for hostel staff, etc?Just wondering what you TT Guatemalan experts think. I've read a few threads about people stocking up on "dollar store goodies" to bring along to have to leave for hostel staff or any people you meet along the way that may have been extra friendly or helpful. Would you recommend it? If so, any specific ideas that Guatemalans would really enjoy or could use? I don't want to get junk - but obviously don't want to fill my suitcase or break the bank. Thank you!! :)

Dollar store cheaters, the tube type are well received. Reading glasses are pricey in Guatemala and a pair in the US can be had for 10Q. Even if the person you give them to has no need, they will know someone who does. They are small and the tube protects them well in transit.

Reading glasses is a great idea! I inquired of every pharmacy and "notions" type store in Copan Ruinas for a pair, and was told to get an Rx from an optometrist and order a pair! Several months later I again looked in Puerto Escondido (Mex) and could only find expensive (300 peso) pair which were junk.

You can buy cheaters in the Central Market in Antigua, about Q10-Q15. A little cash goes a long way for hostal employees and is always welcome.

Several years ago walking along 6th avenue in GC, before they moved the street vendors to the market the city built for them. I bought some real nice transistor FM/AM radios for about $3 a piece. And gave some to my hoel stuff in GC. They work on two AAA batteries and come with their earphones. And they had all kinds of other made in china goodies for about a dollar. I kept two that I have used i Spain and Argentina at night listening to local radio stations because they have good reception. And I haven't seen them in the dollar stores or even the ones that sell stuff for more than a dollar here in the US. And that IMO would make for an excellent gift. What I'm trying to tell you is that in guatemala you can buy a lot of that kind of stuff for pretty much the same price you would pay here in the US, saving you the hassle of having to pack it in your luggage. I agree with some of the suggestions here. Because IMO if you're going to give something as a gift you need to keep in mind those people that work at a hotel could get the wrong message and you may very well hurt their feelings. Give them something they can enjoy, or have a good personal/home use for, not something that sends the wrong mesage that you feel pity for them such as reading glasses. And just because something is super expensive in Mexico it doesn't mean the same goes for guatemala. I've seen T-shirts, underwear and clothes in Mexico selling for a whole lot more than here in the US. In fact I always buy that kind stuff in guatemala, the quality is good and for a whole lot less than what I'd pay at Walmart because it's made in guatemala.
