Question

I flew from Manchester today for the first time (to NYC) and had to wait 70 min. To get through
security. Is this typical? I nearly missed my flight and it was a generally dismal experience.

good job you weren't flying in summer-can take far longer.
thats why they say 3 hours check in for a lot of flights now.

There is higher security for US and IL bound flights. That could have been part of it. Alternatively it could simply have been down to higher alert levels, for example due to the Israel/Gaza dust up of late.

I've never used Manchester but I did have to queue for about 90 mins once (Feb 2006? Abu Hamza had just been arrested) at LHR. It is unusual IMO; normally I'm through in under 15 mins, particularly at LGW.

Queue times at all GB airports are very variable.
I have flown long haul not to the USA from Manchester and also had to wait a long time to get through. On the other hand I have got through very quickly on other occasions. It really isn't a particularly geared up airport anyway and do with haing a lot of money spent on improverments to efficiency and customer service.

Well the security screen didn't seem particularly intense, just slow. Compared to the hustle and bustle at security later on in Newark, where I was through in 10 min. (and it being the last day of thanksgiving weekend, plenty crowded).

It's interesting what you say about Newark and how quick it was. I have been held up in both Newark and JFK for well over an hour. Maybe it is just the luck of the draw.

a generally dismal experience... I'm afraid that pretty much sums up Manchester Airport.

I hate both Newark and JFK. JFK is over crowded, whilst the signage at Newark is appallingly bad.

However, in Newark's favour, I hit it 4 times in 6 days last month and never queued more than 15 minutes for TSA. Was very impressed.

I have probably been through 20 US airports, several of them multiple times, and would only really moan about LAX security-wise although I did have a 90 min wait at Boston to enter the country and almost missed my connecting flight. My bags were less lucky than me.

FWIW, I travelled through MAN terminal 1 yesterday arrived at 0550 for an 0800 flight, and was through security in 25 minutes. However, the flight was delayed about 20minutes waiting for more than a dozen people who had checked in and were delayed by security and even the captain announced that he had been delayed. Since I last used MAN terminal 1 in August new automatic baggage screening machines have been fitted, which seem to take much longer than the manual screening machines - is this the problem? - anyone else experienced these?

The most delays I have experienced at Manchester are due to the auto passport gates. They are often not working. Mind you that is the case at many UK airports. Last year Manchester leapfrogged Stansted to become the UK's 3rd busiest airport after Heathrow and Gatwick. Years ago when it built its second runway it claimed that it would be able to handle over 40,000,000 passengers a year if need be. At the moment it is handling around 19,000,000 and as I see it, somewhat struggling. Then again Heathrow and Gatwick really haven't got too many successful achievements to shout about either.

Every time I've flown through Manchester it has been very slow getting through security, picking up bags etc. Quite easily the slowest in the world I've experienced, on two occasions it has taken me longer to get through immigration than the flight took, both times flying in from Prague with BMI Baby. I admit being a scouser I may have some bias against Manchester but these points are still true.
