Looking for Tips on RV trip from Christchurch to Auckland dec 20 till 31

Aloha everyone,

We are going to do some traveling from dec 20th till end of a year. Starting in Christchurch and ending in Auckland. Our form of transportation is a full size of motorhome. i did some traveling in USA and is pretty easy to do. What is the main difference to do it in New Zealand. If someone has some experience or small itinerary that will be awesome.

Best wishes

Mario

You have loads of research yet to do! Firstly, this is New Zealand and not Hawaii. We don't say Aloha. Secondly, a road trip in the USA will have zero similarities with a road trip in NZ. You'll be on two-laned roads the entire time.

Before we can offer too much advice, we need to know what you hope to accomplish - what are your interests? What do you want to see?

Aloha mazik,

You will have about 9 days for the trip - the day you arrive will be a write off as there's no way you should be driving after the flight from USA - and the day you fly out will be taken up with cleaning and dropping off motorhome and getting to airport.

So that leaves you with a drive up the East Coast of South Island, across on the ferry and either a drive up the middle of the North Island through Taupo, Rotorua, Waitomo maybe or through Hawkes Bay, East Cape etc. Give us a little more information about what you want to see/do? Beaches? Maori culture? Mountains? Hiking? Cows and sheep? Adventure sports?

Thank you again for your reply,

Little bit more info about the trip.

Coming to NZ from Australia a day before I pick up RV. I will have whole 19th to do some shopping in Christchurch. On the 20th I’m picking up Rv and starting the trip.
The End of he trip is planned on the Dec 28 in Auckland when we return the RV. Planning to celebrate a New years in Auckland than flight back to Hawaii on Jan 1 at 9 am…than arrive in Hawaii again in 2012 at 9 pm!!!!!

My family of three with 5 yrs. old son, looking to see as much possible in such a short period. It is hard to say what we after, but definitively no beaches – rather enjoying the outdoor and some sort of activates.

The only thing I now for sure we will go to Queenstown and fly to Milford sound.

Thank you again☺

With 8 days, a campervan, and wanting to go to Queenstown and Milford - I'm not sure how you think you are going to have time for anything else.
You might be best just spending your 8 days around the lower south island (staying away from the coast obviously) and then flying back up to Auckland.

The most important thing to remember about New Zealand is that (like Australia) you drive on the left hand side of the road. I would have opted for a smaller vehicle, as the road, especially South Island, are narrow and winding.
