Train Travel and LuggageHi,
I am travelling over Christmas with my family in Sri Lanka and we are planning on getting the train from Columbo to Kandy and reserving seats in 1st class along with potential other train journeys.
How practical is taking a suitcase or would people who have used trains in Sri Lanka advise backpacks?

3If you are hoping to travel by public transport backpacks are more convenient and easy to handle with crowd.
1st class and trains are not available every where.
If you're intension is always traveling 1st class by train and then by taxi suitcase is OK.
But 1st class is not available at every train.

4also trains are very crowded during tourist high seasons and school vacations in Sri Lanka.

6I don't think you can, because even if you could i can't see how it would make a difference, as when the train stops at the station it is just a mad free for all rush to get a seat--on the Matara line there is no 1st class only 2nd and 3rd-----other lines with 1st class it maybe possible !!

8Unless you are lucky enough to get one of the brand new trains on the Hills line. Even on this line most trains are of the old carriages, but the new train is a beauty. The second class carriages were better appointed and had better luggage storage than the (old)first class observtion carrige we had on the way up from kandy. This new was not crowded either, even after the loading up at Ella(this was on return trip toward Kandy ) as I think the fares were a bit higher than standard. This was a week ago and of course in peak season space much more likely to be at a premium.
