Cycling route 4 in Laos
In about a month I would like to cycle route 4 in Laos, heading North from Vientiane towards Luang Prabang. Have you come that way?On my map it looks like I may have to returm back into Thailand to actually get on that road, which I'd rather not. I will eventually return to Thailand at Huay Xai/Chiang Kong and want to get a Thai visa in Vientiane to give me a full month in Thailand before flying home mid March.
I worry about blowing that visa if I must go to Thailand ever so briefly to get on Lao route 4.
Is there any report about cycling route 4, about accomodation and such?
I have cycled route 13 twice, one down and one up. Would like to try something different.

try this: http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=1&page_id=156016&v=3JGT Rider map shows a dirt road from vientienne to naphiang,
then an asphalt main road to pak lay on highway 4.
Rough Guide map shows a major route, highway 11, from vientienne to
sanakham, then a minor dirt road on the east side of the mekong,
requiring a ferry crossing somewhere to reach the minor road on
the other side to paklai.

I am at Chiang Khong now and will enter Laos in two day's time. Say hi if you see me on the road.I am considering also going south along route 4 but it is a Plan B.
BTW There are some awesome tribal villages showing up Google Earth to the NW of Muang Phiang on Route 4.

Great link to crazyguy -that's why I didn't cycle it!I think I mentioned it in another post, but Lao just announced that they are going to start building a Mekong Dam in this area.
I'd get there fast, because construction traffic can make roads virtually impassable for anything with wheels less than 4metres high!
Please report back.
Of course you could wait 5 years till the dam is finished than it will be silky smooth all the way to LP.
