Malaysia/Langkawi over Christmas?

Hi,

we're still not sure where to go over Christmas. We'd like to spend it on a nice, white beach, maybe in Malaysia, but don't know where to go. In Langkawi, everything seems to be very expensive and overcrowded. Is it possible to show up spontaneously and find cheap accommodation near a beautiful beach (max. 10$ p.p.)? Or is there any other place you can recommend us? At the moment, we're still in Sri Lanka and are not sure where to go ... Philippines would be an option, but we heard it's quite dangerous there.

Thank you for your advice!

Philippines is not dangerous at all (unless you go to SW corner of Mindanao) and there are hundreds of white sand beaches..

Langkawi has became extremely commercialised, so it's hard to get cheap accomodations. It's a lovely place though, no doubt.

If you're looking for sandy white beaches with chances of cheap accomodation, I recommend Phi Phi Island in Thailand, or even Phuket.

However, Phuket is known for its partying ways, so if you go to the wrong part, it can be pretty hard to find a place to relax.
