1Medan Airport is very close to the city center. All budget options are located close to Masjid Raya which is a 15 minute drive to the airport (if no traffic jams). I usually stay at Angel's Guesthouse. It's spartan, but the rooms are clean. Price is 70,000 for a fan room, or 120,000 for an a/c room. It's possible to bargain this price down if you stay a couple of days.

6There are several places there (and I have never stayed in any of them) - there is Rona's and a new place in between plus Residence in the lane behind; turn left at CCR and left again. I think there is another place in that lane as well. And some hotels further away from the Mosque which may be better (and more expensive). Further along is the Hotel Sumatera where I stayed once and it was awful, expensive and and the fittings were falling to pieces.
Take you pick.

7The drivers may find you as you walf out of the terminal (they will walk you out to their transport), if not walk out of the airport grounds and you'll see them. They'll chance their luck asking for amounts as much as 50,000Rp.....
Depends on your negotiation skills... some people are also happy jumping into a Bluebird taxi which operate from the Gas station acorss from the airport.... as previously mentioned I much prefer riding a bike through the traffic.
The journey from airport to Angel is short; once at the Angel there are other options for accommodation at budget prices, but Angel should have space for you, i've never been turned away.
If you're lucky you might even meet another tourist heading that way; a great way to make new friends and cut the costs of a room.

8Angels have some of the coldest beer in Indonesia so, if I am in Medan, I am likely to be imbibing there at nights. I have seen them turn people away many times but they seem (I cannot hear the conversations) to direct people to other places. Usually taxis wait till you have accommodation so don't worry.
As mentioned above Bluebird taxis can be picked up in a garage just outside the airport - there is an IDR 5,000 'parking' fee charged so don't be surprised. Blue bird uses a meter and the charge to Angels should be about 10,000. A becakmotor will probably be 15,000 after bargining.
