Mosquitoes in Hong Kong?
I'll be spending a few days in Hong Kong. I've heard that mosquitoes around there can carry some nasty diseases, so I want to protect myself. I will buy some repellent, but my main question is about mosquito nets...should I buy one of those? I will be staying in a decent hotel, but I don't know if mosquitoes can easily enter buildings at night?Would a mosquito net be necessary and what type of a net would you recommend? Perhaps link to a store? Many thanks!

Where did you pick up that myth? There are very few mosquitoes in Hong Kong's urban areas and low incidence of mosquito-borne diseases in HK. (perhaps some confusion with other Southeast Asian cities? Singapore and Jakarta have problems with endemic dengue fever.)3
Technically, dengue fever is around in Hong Kong (there's a notice about it on the hiking trail that starts near my house), but I've never heard of anyone catching in locally (I had dengue last year, but I caught it in India).I wouldn't worry about it. Mozzies just get a bit annoying, but you're only likely to encounter them in the countryside (NT and outlying islands). If you are going hiking, just buy a small spray from a chemists and use that.

Considering that you will be there in the winter (I presume?) then your chances of encountering mosquitoes will be quite low for a start...If you are travelling in the summer months and you are staying in a decent hotel - that probably means air-conditioning - then you wouldn't have to worry about mosquitoes at all as most likely the room will be well-sealed.
Hope that helps.

I stayed in many hotels in Hong Kong and never really see any mosquitoes at the hotel at all, I think if you will stay in the decent hotel, you will be ok
