Northern Sichuan ClosedHey guys,
After trying to get to Ma'Erkang (Barkam) today we were stopped by a check about 10K outside of the city. We were ordered off the bus and told to go back. A tour came past with some Canadians in it led by a Tibetan guide who spoke Chinese and told us that Aba prefecture was closed. This means Songpan AND Jiuzhaigou, apparently there are a lot of troops gathering in Gansu province due to a lot of trouble there.
As for Western Sichuan I have no idea.as we sneaked past a security check there when all of the police were asleep. But hotels were still taking us in Ganzi and were happy to let us roam in Ba Mei as well.......Danba has been fine too although I'm not sure for how long as it was the policeman was urging us to leave Danba as soon as possible.
So that's the heads up guys

1I don't think all of Aba prefecture (which is a big place) is closed. Specifically Songpan and Jiuzhaigou. At least, foreigners were certainly getting to and from those places earlier this week. The roads from Chengdu to that area do not pass through territory that has seen problems, at least so far. Going north of Chuanzhusi towards Zoige and Langmusi has reported to be problematic recently. SW Gansu has definitely had more police and troop presence. Logically, anybody trying to travel south from Lanzhou to Sichuan might encounter some turnbacks at Linxia or Hezuo, based on how past troubles in the area have been handled.
Unless independent corroborating evidence is provided that Songpan/Jiuzhaigou are specifically closed to foreigners, I would not take the word of a lone agent/guide as gospel.
But thanks for heads up that the rest of the area is dicey right now.

2Well when I asked the policeman could we go to Jiuzhaigou or Songpan the answer was Mei You......The Canadians were going to stay in Hongyuan I believe and they were told they couldn't go there. I know 6 days ago foreigners were going there because I had a Dutch friend who spent 3 days in Jiuzhaigou however this information comes from yesterday.
I guess the road from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou could be OK as we haven't tried that route we have only experienced the Danba-Ma'erkang route.
It wasn't an agent or the guide that really told us, that was the response of the police who we asked at the checkpoint although some westerners were able to buy bus tickets to Jiuzhaigou today from Chengdu.

3Jiuzhaigou being closed to foreigners would be big news. Same with the road from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou (actually two of them). The lack of receiving any such news via various available channels probably means these are not closed. However, I could see the police interpreting your query as the ROUTE from where you were in Danba at the time, to Jiuzhaigou, being open. Some minor roads in Aba Prefecture linking to the main Chengdu-Songpan-JZG road could certainly be under closure.
