Oaxaca!

Hey all...So I'm planing a trip to southern mexico, and I will be flying into Oaxaca. My first destination will be Puerto Escondido, and I'm wondering what the best/most efficient mode of transportation will be from the airport to Puerto Escondido. I would love the input! thanks! :]]

The most efficient mode of transport will a short one hour flight. Next will be a 6 hr.(if I remember right) mini bus ride over the very scenic mountains. If you are prone to car sickness, this is not an option. You can also take a bus, which I think takes a longer but less winding route. Be sure to spend some time in Oaxaca . You must go into the city to take the bus and minibus options.

presumably you are spending time in Oaxaca, otherwise you should just fly straight to Puerto Escondido

It isn't clear from the post whether hether is flying into the Oaxaca city airport, or the Puerto Escondido airport. Transportation from the Oaxaca city airport has been discussed recently. The Puerto Escondido airport is close to the town, less than 3 km from the crucero, either take a taxi, or walk 500 m to highway 200 and flag down a passing bus or colectivo.

Again
if not planning on spending time in Oaxaca City, pay to fly directly to the beach from Mexico City - it's cheaper and much faster and easier

From Oaxaca city by air AeroTucan is the only option right now. The price a week ago was 1,884 pesos ONE WAY, per person. The only flight is at 7 a.m.

The first class night bus takes 10 or more hours, but has fewer hairpin curves than the micro buses and suburbans, which are numerous, leaving every hour from various terminals in the city....around 150 pesos.

Chocolateidea is right. More options from Mexico City to PE by air.

There is a toll road now from Oaxaca de Juarez, the city, to Puerto Escondido. I haven't taken it but it was almost finished the last time I was there, three years ago. Our driver told us the drive would then be 2 1/2 to 3 hours, something like that. It should make it much faster and simpler to get to Puerto Escondido by bus. If at all possible I would strongly recommend a couple of days in the city, it's one of my favorite places in the world with amazing food, people and handicrafts. I keep trying to make it to the beach but I love the city so much I never quite manage to leave!

If this trip is over the holidays make sure you have reservations for your transport as it sells out. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe from Oaxaca you have to fly to Huatulco and then you could bus it to Puerto Escondido from there. I was going to do that trip but the flights were sold out for New Years.

See my post #5. I took this flight a week ago. Oaxaca to PE, 45 minutes.

Once, when a group of 18 students were flying from Oaxaca to PE, they put on an extra flight. Filled the demand.

The completed toll road is more fantasy than reality. There are many tunnels and bridges yet to be built. Widening of the road from the city to the foothills (Miahuatlan) is almost completed. Not a toll road, but it shortens the trip a bit. I don't think a whole lot has been done over the Continental Divide, however. That is a mega engineering/construction feat that has been talked about for at least 15 years!

If you're arriving to Oaxaca Airport and you want to get to Puerto Escondido cheaply, I highly recommend taking a cab to downtown Oaxaca (Las Casas Street) and ask the driver to leave you at one of the garages where vans leave for smaller towns. Those are small vans that charge you about 150 pesos and make the trip in about 5 hours. I used to take them all the time. They go fast but they're save, lots of locals use them to get to smaller towns without paying the obscene fare that ADO charges, and without all the travel hours (ADO bus to Pt Escondido can take up to 11 hours and cost 500 pesos). Plus the vans leave almost every hour or 30 min, and there are lots of garages on the same street with the same routes.
