Sorry, i should have put down a bit more information. I was leaving Moscow on the 22nd of December 2012. I was looking at the № 020SCHCH (№ 020ЩЧ ) which had Coupe (2K) for 10,706.40 rubles. I was also looking at the Number 082I which had Second-class (3G) for 4847.40 rub.
I contacted Russian railways but there answer was a bit vague. From what i gathered second class had 52-54 people and the coupe 2k class has 32-40. But i wasn't sure if there was any other difference apart from the amount of people.

3Плац 4847 руб.
Купе 10706 руб.
Does it look like this?
These fares are Kupe (10706) or Plastkartney (4847). In Kupe you have an enclosed compartment with more privacy, its generally quieter and cleaner, toilets are likely to be cleaned more frequently.
Plastkartney is more like a dorm its open plan so you have very little privacy and as you noted it will be more crowded, some people prefer because it negates the possibility of being behind a closed door with a carriage mate your uncomfortable with.
Personally we took plastkartney for short overnight journey such as St Petersburg to Yaroslavl however for the long trip out to Irkutsk I would thoroughly recommend Kupe.

The 082I train on that date has tickets available in 2nd class (купе / coupe = four-person closed compartment) for 10,706 rubles. The cheaper 4,847 ruble tickets are in плацкарт / platskart. These are open carriages (no doors) with four bunks in each section as well as double bunks all the way along the corridor. They have no privacy and tend to be very crowded, very loud, and very dirty. I've taken them on a number of occasions in Russia when I've had no other choice, but only then. For a trip all the way from Moscow to Irkutsk it'd be miserable. I strongly advise you avoid them unless you are on an ultra-tight budget. You can see what they look like here.

5Thank you for all your help. I think i will take the number 020SCHCH. Are there any cars that are preferable to others for this train.I can either have car number 1,3,8,12. Also when i was trying to book another train and it asked for identification it didn't accept my passport number. I think it's because it wants a 9 number answer where is Australian passports only have 8.
