Christmas in El Salvador - Atmospheric Place & Bus schedules

1. I am considering spending 7-10 days in El Salvador, spanning Christmas. I have some liberty in planning the itinerary, so I am wondering what your opinions are on what location might be best over Christmas? I plan to reserve a hotel for those busy few days.

I would like to attend mass on the evening of Christmas Eve/Vispera de Navidad with the locals, so being in an atmospheric place (in terms of celebrations and/or traditions), would be a plus. (By the way, is it midnight mass or some other time in El Salvador?) And if I were in San Salvador, would it be safe to venture out and come back that late at night? Would taxis be available? I assume the capital would have quite a few fireworks and mass would be celebrated at the Catedral Metropolitana. Any better place? Like Santa Ana or somewhere else?

2. Are public inter-city buses running on regular schedules on December 25 and 26?

I have checked with TicaBus and King Quality (their international buses are running). But I wonder about regular buses. I am thinking of heading to Copan Ruinas via El Poy on December 26.

And if they are running, should I expect buses/border crossings to be particularly busy (or quite the contrary, given that most people celebrate those two days with family)? Should I head out on the 25 or 26?

Maybe Juayua is a good place to be, the church is nearby and the town is not that big - and you have many activities nearby. You might be right about the 26th not having too many travellers - after being up all night before.

Hey Roque! I'm surprised you didn't mention that the bus station may or may not be standing after veinte-cuatro! Like yourself I;m sure, I've seen houses burn to the ground owing to errant cohetes! It gets really crazy on that date and treinte-uno tambien. I've always just armed myself with silbadores and a lighter and joined in the warfare. Crazy fun! Perhaps Juayua will be more sedate. Feliz dias de fiesta!

Border Question?! I am a little nervous about this... I will be arriving at Comalapa, San Salvador, El Salvador. My Honduran family is picking me up at the salvadorean airport and we're driving to El Poy to get to Copan Ruinas, Honduras. I will definately have luggage because I am bringing gifts to Honduras and to El Salvador once I get back 3 days later. Do they check cars for luggage? Do they charge for luggage? Is it going to be an issue going into Honduras or going back into El Salvador? Please let me know. Thank you!

#3 Your family will be driving a car with Honduras plates, right?
I think you have a better chance of having no problems, if that is so...

At the salvadorean side, it shouldn't be a problem, but at the Honduras side, if you are salvadorean or going with a car with salvadorean plates, they might want a "mordida" (bribe)

#2 I did indeed lose my home (wooden construction, built in the 1920's downtown, and maybe from a wealthy family back then) to Fireworks - it burned down at New Years some years ago... :(

Jeez!, Roque, I'm truly sorry about that! Guess I don't have to say any more about how crazed it gets in la capital, Santa Tecla and Puerto among other places during the holidays. I've always had lots of fun, but it is indeed somewhat dangerous. Feliz dias de fiesta! I'll be in Salvador for the month of February. I may send you a pm closer to that time and maybe we can meet in Puerto. Vaya bien!

#6 Nice, hope to see you on February! (don't worry about my house burning down, it was less traumatic than my father being kidnapped and then being forced to leave the country - in the time of the civil war!)
