Any concentration higher than about 40% DEET offers doubtful additional protection and is thought to increase the risk of toxicity to the user. That is, the bugs are no more likely to stay away but you are more likely to acquire a nasty illness from it.

Mozzies love light skinned people ie Irish welsh and Scots Celtic types, so a good tip is to befriend these when travelling so that early evenings when Mozzies are at their worse ie outside restaurants, they swarm onto celts and leave the rest of us alone. test it out you will see it works lol

Wow - thanks for that.

So THAT's why I make friends when travelling monty? And here was me thinking it was my charm, good looks and witty banter that did it when in reality, I'm just a science experiment...... :(

And no it won't be any good sitting next to me regardless of my celtic blood cos I'll be the one twitching and convulsing in the corner wearing 80% Deet!

I know we joke about cliches Scotty but in Edinburgh usually stay High St Hostel, one time Ireland was playing Scotland rugby. checking in he asked me Top or bottom bunk I chose bottom bunk and the whole room stunk worse than a rugby players underwear yuk clothes dirty socks were strew all over the place beds not mad back packs left open dirty washing all over the floor.non of the occupants were home. So I went back to reception and asked if I could have the top bunk he had offered me. This room was spotless beds made backpacks neatly placed by beds window open even on the made up bed each had placed his bed shorts on the pillow the air was sweet. So I moved in went back to reception and suggested jokingly that the first room must have been a load of paddies (Irish) and the one I moved into a load of Germans He just laughed and said yes you are right 7 Germans in the clean one and 7 Irish over for the rugby match in the scruffy one. When I saw the Irish guys and had a great evening with them later I rubbed it in, what a load of scruffs they were and they should not fit the cliche lol
I won't mention the scots here though " See yoo chib yoo Jimmy " remember I was once married to one, although I do miss the beatings Ha! Ha!

You can get the DEET stuff in the UK, but I have not been able to find it anywhere else. It's banned in most countries here.

I'm seriously rethinking our DEET product!

Just an aside.
No need to travel out of Europe to catch dengue-there is currently an outbreak in Madeira with nearly 1000 cases.

I'm always amazed that we don't have it in NZ - we have enough bloody mosquitoes!

There is no EU ban on DEET. We can get it in Finland, nothing else works as well. We do have a lot of mozzies in some places, but no malaria, thank god. Using too much DEET can actually kill a person, has happened more than once, when the whole body has been covered with the substance. Better wear long sleeve & long pants and spray only exposed parts and cuffs.

frightens me when I buy a bottle, it always burns the labels away, goodness knows what it does to your skin, so do not use if pregnant.
