Yosemite early DecemberHello all, hope you can give me some advise,
I'm lucky enough to be flying out to San Fran for work next week and i've been able to add a couple of days onto the end.
I'm hoping to see some of Yosemite but i'd like to get a little clarification about the weather / accessibility of the place. I had a look at a couple of day tours to get an idea of what's worth seeing but a lot seem to finish in October which makes me think it's just going to be the wrong time of year to vist.
My plan was to hire a car for a couple of days drive out to Yosemite, stay in a hostel somewhere (despite the business trip i'm very much a backpacker at heart, and wallet) and just have a drive about and a few easy walks.
Is this a bit too relaxed for this time of year?
And if you know any decent tours that still operate this time of year that can take the hard work out of it a bit i'd love to know.

1Definitely rent a car and stay a nite or two. The $140 day -tours take half a day to get there, loop around
the valley before taking the other half of the day to return to where you started- total agony once you set
your eyes on the beautry of Yosemite Valley. There's no cheap Hostel in Yosemite Valley, to my knowledge. Either try to reserve mid-week with Curry Cabins (around
$100) or get over to a Big-5 Sporting Goods store, or a K-Mart and buy a warm sleeping bag. If you can
rent a vehicle you can throw a $30 inflatable mattress into-- by all means rent it. Otherwise buy a tent and
chances are good you can get a camping space in December. You MUST SLEEP IN A DESIGNATED
CAMP SPOT or drive back out of the Valley. Try to reserve one. Be sure to bring thermals, hat and gloves
and the usual cold-weather clothes with you.
Weather-wise, there is no snow predicted for the next 10 days. Beyond that, the National Weather
Service does not forecast- but in reality when snowstorms move in, it's usually for just 1-3 days and it will
snow perhaps 9-12 days in December at most. So, it's a crap-shoot predicting. If it's snowing-- it really is not a
big deal entering the Park via Hwy 140 as long as you also bring snow chains for the tires. (Also another reason to hit K-Mart or similar and return the chains if you don't use them.) If it's not snowing- it's about a 4-hour drive from the Bay Area.
Keep looking at Weather.com and jot down the State of California's Phone Hotline for Yosemite Road
Conditions: (209) 372-0200. At the beginning of your business trip, you should be able to determine what will be up with the weather.

4Even Yosemite Lodge at the Falls currently has rooms for Dec. 1, 2, 3 beginning at $133. Off-season rocks!

5I've not stayed at The Bug, but have been through the area, in the foothills. Check reviews on Tripadvisor, etc. Not bad area, but if I could stay in Yosemite Valley rather than several miles below it, I would, especially for a short visit. In the winter I'd certainly opt for the Lodge vs. Camp Curry, but some would be fine in the latter, at least in the heated tent cabins (unheated ones cost less), though having to walk to the central rest room/shower area in the cold may not be fun. The above price at Yosemite Lodge sounds great.

There are also a number of cheap/free campgrounds just outside the park, along 140 and the river. You can find a shower at Curry Village.

8FYI: The Bug Hostel is about a one-hour drive out of Yosemite Valley. (One of the Reviews by one
guest said they got (Bed)Bugs at the Bug. Yikes! (That's not why they call it "The Bug" is it?!)

9I would say in this time of year that on going on a tour is perhaps the way to go, as there can be a fair amount of snow and ice around and its drivers will have better knowledge of Yosemite and its roads that the average joe.
