Renting a car or a car with a driver?
We plan to be in the Ukraine in August. We want to travel from Chmelnitzki and south towards Kamienetz Podolsk and chernivitzi...Is renting a car and driving a car there is possible? Is it better to get a guide with a car? Will we be able to find our way without knowing the language?Any suggestions for the best way?
Thanks
Baruch

Hi - and welcome to thiorn Tree.Just one little pointer for starters.... It is 'Ukraine', not The Ukraine.
The chances of getting by 100% without complications, when not knowing any of the language, are slim.
What is your first language?
Yes it is possible to rent-a-car in Ukraine in pretty much any city or big town. Rates are normally OK.
Whether it's better to hire a driver or not, is entirely up to you. personally, I wouldn't, but it's down to choice.
I have hired many vehicles in Ukraine, don't speak the language particularly well - and have had no problems.
Best of luck with everything.

Dear Baruch,It is possible to get oriented on Ukraine roads. The biggest ones have signs in English. You should be equipped with maps and GPS if possible.
As for me, I would suggest you to hire a car and a guide or at least Russian\Ukrainian\English speaking assistant. Then, at leats you won't have any language problems while travelling in Ukraine.

Hi,I had a guide and driver for my trip from Liviv to Khotan.
Would not try it myself.
They got lost!
They were still in a low enough daily rate that it was better to hire them than to try it myself!

Is it safe to rent a car + a guide by the internet?I thought of taking a train from Kiev to Chmelnitzki or Kamienetz Podolsk and get the car there and travel in the area for a few days.
How much can it cost us per day?

You should definitely get yourself a good GPS if you are planning to do it on your own. There are no roads in Ukraine that would have enough road signs! Also, be prepared to see some crazy people driving our roads. Make sure you don't break the speed limit, otherwise you will be stopped by the road police. As such, I would highly recommend hiring a car with a Ukrainian driver who knows how things work here. If you were to rent a car, I think it would cost you even more than just hiring a cab with a driver.Good luck!

I would suggest taking a train from Kiev to Kamienetz Podolski. There is nothing to do on the road from Chmelnitzki to Kamienetz Podolski. And tourist business is more developed Kamienetz Podolski so probably it worth to try to find some car hire option via internet. I would definitely suggest you to take a local driver. And a tour agency can arrange you guide in each sight you are going to visit.10
There are reasonable quality trains which connect the entire country. use them to get to the cities you are interested in and then hire locally car and driver for local touring. If you rent a car, even with GPS, you will be lost often and end up having to bribe traffic police for eventual infractions.
cost will end up being more than hiring a car-driver.
or hirea car and driver which will run you about usd 200 per day plus expenses.

Hi there I would not advise driving on the H03 road if you are not used to our Ukrainian roads it can be a very difficult road if you do not know it. Try this link and i think you will be happy http://www.hostelsinchernivtsi.com/touristsevices.html it costs around 500 uah for a jeep and driver for the day
