Ireland doesn't normally accept $'s. It's €'s in the south (Republic), £'s in the north.
Are you using a car and just planning to look on arrival, or public transport? It makes quite a difference.
With a car you can start looking when you feel like it. On a bus or train, you'll have to wait till you get there.
I would suggest booking your first night in advance, just in case you're held up and arrive late.
It does have disadvantages though. If you don't make it, you might lose your advance payment.
In September, it should be easy finding a place on spec. I would just get a room on a daily basis.
That way, you're not tied to being somewhere at a certain time, on a particular day.
Best of luck with everything.

3Keep a few £'s for Northern Ireland. It has it's own notes that it's wise to get rid of before leaving.
They don't have so much clout as English currency.
