They'd filled the thing with crash-test dummies to test the effects.
Most people on board would have survived, though needless to say, any not wearing seatbelts would have been f*$£%d...
The crash was pretty spectacular, but unless you were the pilot, in first class, or not wearing a seatbelt, you'd likely have been OK. And it was the kind of crash that is apparently commonest - a screw-up on the approach.
I actually feel better now!

scottyheather - there was an awesome documentary on TV in the UK last month in which a team of experts crashed a remote-controlled passenger jet in the Mexican desert. The footage was spectacular, but it was also educational. They'd filled the thing with crash-test dummies to test the effects.

I'm also no fan of flying, and get myself proper worked up in turbulence. But actually, this one was kind of comforting. The crash was pretty spectacular, but unless you were the pilot, in first class, or not wearing a seatbelt, you'd likely have been OK. And it was the kind of crash that is apparently commonest - a screw-up on the approach.
