Air Asia.

It looks like I can get a flight from KL to BKK for about £65. I would much rather take the train from Butterworth but they all seem to be full according to their web site. Is Air Asia as bad as Ryan Air with all kinds of hidden extra charges?

I have taken a number of Air Asia flights. There are no real hidden charges other than the usual of travel insurance, in-flight meals, seat selection and check-in baggage options. All these which you can opt out of if you like.

AirAsia are now more open about the 'proper fare' when you are looking at flight options, and the box on the right column shows the taxes etc.
One other hidden charge is if you use a credit/debit card, RM8 per flight.

Is the train from HadYai to BKK full too?
If its not, you can easily do the Butterworth-HadYai trip in a minivan (about 4 hours) and then catch the train HDY-BKK.

Butterworth to Had Yai is currently full due to the Malaysia school holidays for the next few weeks. There are more train options once you get to Had Yai and should be able to get a seat.

@Sbruny. I was looking at dates at the beginning of Jan. I haven't even left England yet.

The only unavoidable "hidden charge" seems to be the booking fee, as mentioned above. There's a baggage fee, but carry-on luggage is free. Other than that it's just a case of unticking all the extra boxes as you go through the booking process, and working out how to "skip seat selection"...

They seem to have revamped the web site and its much easier to opt out of the insurance now.

Hi edthesock - IS there anything worse than Ryan Air? (Isn't their CEO trying to get standing room on his flights? Though to be fair, he does have a point - if your aircraft is going to go down, a seatbelt probably won't save you.)

scottyheather - there was an awesome documentary on TV in the UK last month in which a team of experts crashed a remote-controlled passenger jet in the Mexican desert. The footage was spectacular, but it was also educational.
They'd filled the thing with crash-test dummies to test the effects.

Most people on board would have survived, though needless to say, any not wearing seatbelts would have been f*$£%d...

Wow - I'll keep my seatbelt on then. (Must admit timdog, not being a real fan of flying, I tend to avoid airplane disaster documentaries :)

I'm also no fan of flying, and get myself proper worked up in turbulence. But actually, this one was kind of comforting.

The crash was pretty spectacular, but unless you were the pilot, in first class, or not wearing a seatbelt, you'd likely have been OK. And it was the kind of crash that is apparently commonest - a screw-up on the approach.

I actually feel better now!

I might have to google it - anything for a happier flight (minus the valium!)

Thanks timdog :)
