3 weeks in Thailand...
I'm off to Thailand next year for 3 weeks, I went years ago for 2 months and want to try and see places I didn't get too last time, but I think we're trying to fit too much in over 3 weeks, thoughts?Arrive Bangkok - 3 nights (I wanted to stay only 1 having spent quite a bit of time there before, but the person I'm travelling with has never been before)
Train to Phitsanaluk/across to Sukhothai
... at that point I'd really like to continue north, by train to Chiang Mai and then to Chiang Rai... but think we'd need at least 4 nights all togther to make it worth it?
Sleeper train Chiang Mai - Bangkok then Bangkok - Khao Sok national park - 3 nights
Khao Sok to Krabi/Koh Lanta/Phi Phi for a couple of nights
Back to Bangkok

Your definatley going to need longer in the south. You will fall in love with it and wish you hadnt spent so long in bangkok and the north. There is really no need for 3 nights in bangkok, most people will tell you that, its a cool place but youve seen it in a day.Get to the south where the real beauty is :-)

If you have been to Bangkok before I think 2 nights is fine , You're probably familiar.Traveling by Train it's good experience , I think you can do one way by train and and one by fly this could save your time.
http://www.airasia.com/th/en/home.page , Khao Sok not so sure but I think Surat Airport have minivan service to go to Khao Sok national park.
If you don't have accommodation yet I advice this one http://www.khaosok-treehouse.com/ , by the way stay on Raft house is good expedience too.
Have a great trip! :)

I've spent a lot of time in Bangkok before, but the person I'm travelling with hasn't, so I although I'm not keen to spend to long there I've been overruled, lol it's his trip too!Yes, flying back to the south could be an option to save some time travelling back from the north. I'll have a look at the flights, thanks - did everything by train/bus last time as I had so much longer but 3 weeks isn't that long really
Thanks for the accommodation recommendation, I've been looking at this one too for Khoa Sok http://www.khaosokaccommodation.com/accommodation.html#junglehouse
I feel really organised actually planning accomodation, last time we booked nothing upfront apart from the first night in Bangkok

Hi,if you go to Sukhothai (really beautiful!), consider going there by bus, from Bkk..
with the train you stop in Phitsanulok then you have 1 hr by taxi, or 1,5 by bus, to new Sukhothai , then again tuk-tuk, to Old Sukhothai ...
I did it, un march, but when I was there I saw the busses, direct to Old Sukhothai (from Ghiang Mai or Bkk), and ifI really think it's better.. by the way, taxi are pretty expensive, from and for Phitsanulok
:-) enjoy !

Thinking we might not go to the north, I did spend quite a long time in Chiang Mai before and loved it, and really wanted to get to Chiang Rai, but we are pushing it time-wiseSo new idea...
Arrive Bangkok - 3 nights (I wanted to stay only 1 having spent quite a bit of time there before, but the person I'm travelling with has never been before)
Train to Phitsanaluk/across to Sukhothai
train back to Bangkok & then Khao Sok national park - 3 nights
Khao Sok to Krabi/Koh Lanta/Phi Phi/other islands
