Renting a CAR while we're IN CubaWe would like to rent a car several times for a few days while we're in Cuba. So not during the whole trip (one month). Is this difficult? Several people tell us we should do this on beforehand (from our home country, before getting to Cuba. They say it's difficult to rent a car in Cuba. The cars could be out of supply, finished. Is this correct? Is it really so hard to rent a car for some days (with drop of) in Cuba? We realise it's more expensive to rent it there but we will save much money by not renting a car for a whole month.
Hope you can tell us!~Thanks in advance!

1You don´t say when you are traveling but, if its December or early January it can be quite difficult (if not impossible) to find a car without driving around in a taxi to different rental offices with fingers tightly crossed and your "chango" bracelet on...(-:
My suggestion would be that you contact some of the self employed “Cuban” members of this forum such as jorge58 or pototo. They are IN CUBA and, as such, have local relationships which may be able to help.

2In my experience outside of Havana it is usually not difficult to rent a car in Cuba. If cars are not available in one office, it is worth while also contacting other offices, even within the same company. If the cost worries you you should know that tariff charges may vary with seasons, but I doubt that charges will be negotiable. If you know more or less where to go it might also be a worthwhile alternative asking a a few taxi drivers for their price. Besides the government taxies which are usually easily identified there are also private taxies with permission (patente). In both taxi categories there may be a wide variety of quality.

4Demand of cars over (big time) supply anywhere in Cuba during high season. So new regulations have been established for peak season not to make reservations of cars which are not going to be rented at least for five days . Price are high already if booking and rpepaying pre-trip. You do not really want to know how much they are charging in CUC these days if you show up at a desk.
Friends rented car and paid three months ago to be allocated in Vinales and yesterday rental car agency had to send a car there from Matanzas…not having any available in neither Pinar del Rio nor Havana.

5Thank you everybody so far! So it depends of the period. We are in Cuba: 20 February - 20 March.
Still considering your reactions.
