I don't think you could get a direct Bus from Delhi to Varanasi, its around 800 kms. By bus you can break you journey to Delhi-Lucknow-Varanasi OR Delhi-Kanpur-Varanasi.It is difficult to get a confirm train ticket now for early December as many people go to Varanasi for Religious, Spiritual and Buddhist tours, you may try in foreign quota.

Thankyou all so very much for your input... am now on the trail!! Whatever and whichever way,,, I will get there, maybe the bus is the answer. As I have a couple of months travelling I~ am going south to Cochi and Kerala, went there 5 years ago, I presume now the prices are more expensive,,, any recommendations for a reasonable guest house for a pensionable lady?

You'll probably find direct buses from Delhi to Varanasi, but it's a long way, and it will not be comfortable. If you do end up doing this by bus, you're best off breaking up the trip: Lucknow is the obvious place to stop, and it's a very interesting city in its own right. There are regular government buses on both the Delhi-Lucknow and Lucknow-Varanasi sections, and the road's fairly decent by Indian standards. Are you aware of the tourist quota? On many trains, there are special seats/berths available only to foreigners. In Delhi, you can purchase these at the main train station. So even if a train looks full on Cleartrip, you still might be able to pick up tickets (most likely in Sleeper class) at New Delhi Train Station on the tourist quota.
Going to Agra won't really break up your trip. Kanpur or Lucknow are the obvious cities to break up a Delhi-Varanasi trip. You should find convenient day-trains on these routes.

The best way toget to kerala from new delhiis the matsaganda express.you can try rajdhani trains or duranto. From panvel mumbai to the south of kerala there is the konkan rly roughly 30 hrs will get you to the tip of kerala
from mumbai.
Staying in kerala is quite cheap rs 700 per day roughly. But they may hike prices if you are a foreigner.
I always prefer a train as the roads in kerala are lousy
if youdo take a bus take a Volvo .
however the roads can be very bad(corrupt contactors)
